I was amazed, when reading my grandparents letters, written in 1924, to see they used the expression 'Nuff said'

We had an old teacher at school (she was probably about 30 lol ) who often used to say "what an obstreperous class i have today"... needless to say first time she said it we had to look it up in a dictionary lol

Today I thought " Lummy " and then I thought now thats a word you never hear these days .......lol

Hmmmmm, Amanda, wasn't Lummy started in the navy lark by some posh speaking bloke, can't remember his name now?

Leslie Phillips, yes thats the one and i think he said it when he saw a pretty girl, although it was on the radio and yes i am that old LOL LOL.

I too was wondering what happened to shall and shan't. They seem to have become synonymous with will and won't. I know that there is a difference - can somebody throw some light on it ?

As a kid I remember a lady who is long gone now to her all kids were either a "blinkin' nuisance" or a "bloomin' nuisance". I heard her swear in my grandad's kitchen once and he kicked her out the house and never admitted her again. To Grandad blinkin' and bloomin' were swear words, glad he can't hear kids today. I don't hear ditherin' or blitherin' much either.

Do people still get "sent to Coventry" or go "up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire"? I wonder how these started?

My dad had a lot of his own saying that I have never heard anywhere else.

My mother made hot water bottle covers for us all and he would call the covers a "Jackie Howe" - my daughter still uses this phrase. It was not till a few years ago we found that Jackie Howe was a sheep shearer in Oz and it was the name given there to navy singlet tops.

Amongst others was he would say to me when I was being unhelpful "you wouldn't even show your poor old granny a shortcut to the sh** house"

Others were "onky parokey" - which meant it was wobbly. If something broke he would always say "ruination has set in" - I thought ruination was a made up word until I found it in the dictionary.

He used to swap words around and when something was lost he would say "Missappeared Disteriously" and my OH put hose two words in my dad's obituary notice .... dad would've loved it.

and my grandfather would always say when he had finished his meal that he had had "ample sufficiency"

His umbrella was a gamp - I had forgotten that.

Every time my son in law visits he is convinced we make up new words for his benefit with the result 'The Yorkshire Dictionary' is kept out until he goes home. I wouldn't say that I use any Yorkshire words but he has proved otherwise.-JLe

There were a lot more sayings that my mum used to say but i cant remember them at the moment .
