I spoke with my cousin in Wellington, NZ this evening, even on the north island they felt some effect. Her one daughter lived in Christchurch until a year ago,now safe in Queensland,Aus. Her other daughter is a doctor living in Auckland, where all the hospitals are on "red alert". Tragic, absolutely tragic.

Positive thoughts to everyone affected by this tragedy.
Pray the death toll won't rise too much.

And we moan when we have too much or snow. Puts so much into perspective.

I just wanted to add my condolences to all those who have suffered loss of life in this terrible earthquake. We haven't yet made it to New Zealand, but travelled to Vancouver Island in June last year. All along the roadside into Tofino on the Pacific Rim West Coast, we saw Tsunami warning signs. Standing on the beach, it brought home to us the enormity of natural disasters and their potentially devastating effect.

I'm sure the community in NZ will pull together and rebuild but it is a stark reminder of just how vulnerable we humans are.

Thinking of all those on this site who have relatives there.

Annie from NZ Report 22 Feb 2011 18:55

11 people rescued from the rubble overnight so this is good news. Too many people died . There are still a lot of areas to be checked so the number of fatalities may unfortunately increase. What a terrible time of day for it to happen with everyone a work and shopping in the city is why the toll is so high. The last quake happened in the early hours of the morning when everyone was at home in bed.

Hi all

Huia lives in North Island, far away from Christchurch.

Kiwibird is also safe, she also doesn't live near Christchurch but has relations there.

My friend managed to get a message out overnight. Here's part of what she said:-

I am fine, my stout little house standing all the twisting and
thumping and shaking like a naughty dog... and the rattles, but the
contents are all over the floor and the precious things that didnt
break last time are shattered now!

and its stout little owner too.holding up, and thinking of making
soup for multitudes! .but the city is devastated with our cathedral
collapsed, and many many buildings down, and people trapped.... We
were beginning to come out of it and get all the repairs to the city
made, and now its like a war zone. I can only tell from the
newsreel...my power has just been connected, and my phone on again

..... poor old Lyttelton just 3 k across the harbour ... all dark, and half
the town buildings collapsed... A cruise ship still sitting there
as its passengers are being collected from the city... the Lyttelton
Tunnel is closed, another road closed into the harbour due to a
bridge collapse, I think there may be only one road over the Port
Hills at present.

........... I am getting off this... we keep getting really nasty frightening
strong aftershocks.

Look at Google Christchurch Quake Map... that will show it all...

scary eh?

Best wishes to you all. We visited new Zealand a couple of years ago and loved it. My husband was offered a job in Christchurch but had to turn it down. I wonder where he would be today if he had accepted.

Thinking of everyone in NZ... and hoping you are all well.
Dreadful scenes on the TV and stories from the people this morning (on radio) from there is just awful.

I can think of nothing to say other than 'god bless' and hope you are able to find your loved ones.

Thinking of you all,

This is dreadful. that part of the world is having a terrible time of it lately. has anyone heard from Susan, NZ? Nature certainly has the edge on weapons of destruction. We should be thankful to live here in United kingdom. God bless all concerned in NZ.
