And what about the Magic Faraway tree by Enid Blyton. One of hers I loved was called The Family at Redroofs (or was it redrooves?)

Sheila - we used to have the pirate books as readers at school. there was a Griffin Pirate series and a Dragon Pirate series. They were by Sheila McCullock or similar

Did anyone read Malcolm Saville's books - there was the Lone Pine series and some others I think. They were mysteries which I really enjoyed. I'd still love to go to Shropshire and see some of the places mentioned.

I didn't read his children's books but I have read the ones he wrote for adults.
