It will also help if you give a location for Joseph's likely birth/marriage.

This looks like Joseph (the son's) birth reference:-

Name: SEVERN, Joseph
Registration District: Sheffield
County: Yorkshire
Year of Registration: 1860
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's Maiden Name: Not available before 1911 Q3
Volume No: 9C

Do you have this for his parent's names? It's just that he is living with his grandparents in the 1861 and 1871 census with no father around so it is possible that he was illegitimate and the deceased father on the marriage certificate was "made up" in order not to lose face in front of the in-laws.

nudge

pretty please

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 4 Jan 2012 00:05

The 1881 census image definitely looks like the surname for Joseph is Severn and not Levern, so it looks as if Joseph WAS the illegitimate son of Millicent.

The birth certificate (reference given earlier) will confirm or refute this.

I have also tentatively come to the conclusion that this Joseph Severn is probably an illegitimate son of Millicent, but have not been able to locate a baptism.

There is a baptism for Charles Hunt Severn at Neepsend that clearly gives his mother as Millicent, spinster. Charles was born 1865 but baptised March 10th 1869. There is more information on my tree.
