I am glad to see that the news reports are showing some 'balance' as to the political aspects of Mrs Thatcher's life, too often there is an outpouring of sycophancy when someone 'notable' in politics ( of any political shade) dies.

At least there is an acknowledgement, to paraphrase what someone has just said, that if you benefited under Thatcherism you are going to have a very different feeling today than if you were one who suffered under Thatcherism.

I think she played a large part in dragging us out of the post war attitude that "everything will be alright because the government will look after us".
Let us not also forget the large part she played in the ending of the Cold War

For me Margaret Thatcher defined courage and strength in leadership. She loved our country and did whet she considered to be in our best interest. Regardless of your political persuasions she deserves some respect.

RIP Baroness Thatcher, you have earned your rest.

Didn't resprect her when she was alive. My opinions havien't changed. She divided this country and will not be forgotten for the damage her policies did to some communities who are still suffering.

I think Rollo means Rolls Royce in Derby. Makes aircraft engines, nuclear submarine power units and so on? One of the most technological advanced companies we have?

Probably no need to comment on each and every post, after all that is what is causing much of the issues with JLC's threads.

Rolls Royce is owned by BMW

Rollo surely you don't lament the demise of the Allegro, the Marina/Ital, the Princess etc lol

I do agree with you however

It is ludicrous to say that Margaret Thatcher destroyed UK manufacturing industry. She certainly removed the closed shop and subsidy culture.

Unless I am dreaming we have for instance Rolls Royce, British Aerospace, Formula 1, a substantial car making capacity and thousands and thousands of small and medium companies up and down the country making all sorts of high tech stuff. The biggest obstacle to it growing is lack of skilled people with an engineering or biotech bent.

What industries went down ? British Leyland / Austin / Morris who made horrible unreliable cars, trucks and buses and a raft of stuff whose time had come - archaic shipbuilding, coal, steel. They would have gone with or without Margaret Thatcher.

True, very tough for South Wales which has never really gotten over the shock of modern times. I have been in Newport several times recently. The contrast with nearby Bristol is amazing.

Roy please don't turn this into an argument.
This thread is not about that and if something has been posted then deleted then there should be no problem.

Ann, I did read your post and as stated you said far more, May be you should not have been so quick to deleted the thread/post, So others may have had time to read your post.

As for facts about her being responsible for ruining our manufacturing industry is not a fact, ...... it's your opinion,

My opinion is that the manufacturing industry required no help from anyone,... They did it all by themselves

terryj - Churchill also saw off Hitler! Not sure that there were many politicians around then who could or would have inspired such leadership! His funeral was in recognition of a great man at a time of dire danger from a grateful nation. Mrs Thatcher too was a couragous strong and dedicated leader, and I think people have forgotten what a shambles this country was when she came to power and how deeply embarassing it was to admit to being British to the rest of the world, laughing stock comes to mind!! I think she was an amazing woman and we could do with someone like her NOW!
