My father in law used to open his Christmas presents, smile and thank each of his children and grandchildren politely and carry on drinking his coffee. He never opened one.

When he died, my mother in law must have found about 40 unopened presents in his wardrobe. :-) Not a clock to be seen, but plenty of lovely shirts and socks.

I'm the same. It is important I see people at Christmas, and I like to give presnets. But presents for me are no longer required. For my last birthday, I asked for Y fronts. Simply because I can't find any in the shops any more and I know how much the ladies like shopping for clothes.

You're not grumpy, Harry. You are a paid up member of the real old men's club :-D

I have happily let my (now late) wife do all the work with cards and presents over the years - it seems like an onerous task Any comments on your 'present' troubles welcome.

PRESENT TENSE

Cards and presents can be a problem,
As well as cost the earth;
Christmas is a mine-field,
Perhaps more hassle than it's worth.

"I'm not going through all that again,
That's it; I quit; I'm through";
But then of course you realise,
All your friends may misconstrue.

My family has a present trampoline,
Plainly something YOU don't do;
My scarf came back last Christmas,
After three years it's deja vu.

Our presents must be 'sensible',
Cheap and cheerful is the norm;
Woolly hat; a pair of gloves,
Anything 'to keep you warm'.

With cards and presents you are twice blessed,
Both to receive and as much to send;
The best gifts come from the heart ,
An acknowledgement to a friend.

So what do you give to the man with everything?
Certain drugs? A burglar alarm?
My solution is an easy one,
Fairly safe and can do no harm.

Every poem needs a punch line,
A smile; a groan; - and rhyme;
A pound shop clock for the awkward sod -
There's no present like the time!
