... creeps into (our) the English Language!

Black Friday - the 'official' start to Christmas Shopping.

(What did we do to deserve this new term, I wonder?)

Hmmm!

When I heard Black Friday today it was in conjunction with Belfast and I had a panic as the only time I have heard of this expression was when over 20 bombs went off around Belfast on a Friday in the seventies.

What a weird expression to use for shopping.

In the US it is the day after Thanksgiving Thursday, and marks the day when they all start Christmas shopping. I've never seen it used in a UK context before this year, we don't need any more festive triggers!

Dear Barry

Hello

Hope you are keeping well.

Sounds more like a term used for economic crisis.

Thanksgiving used to be a peaceful day for a meal with loved ones and remembering the generosity of the native americans given
to the newly arrived pilgrims back in the 1620's.

It is shameful that native americans are still struggling to attain
basic human rights.

Take gentle care
Very best wishes
Elizabeth, EOS

Black Friday followed by Skint Saturday?

I saw this on the news too!
As Asda is part of the US based Walmart group, they rolled out Black Friday in their UK stores.
Chaos, fights and injuries!

To expand on Elizabeth2469049 comments -

There are massive sales in the stores on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day. This is on the 4th Thursday of November.

In the past, the crowds have been so horrendous and frantic that people have been killed in the crush/rush. A couple of years ago one of our daughters visited the other over the period. The resident daughter flatly refused to go take her souvenir shopping on that day

I've had some emails this week from retailers, referring to Black Friday too.

Silly expression.

I had to check the calendar (and my brain) to make sure it wasn't the 13th :-S

just saw an article about "black Friday" sales in the US.

They're mad!!

One woman was reported to have used a taser on another shopper! :-0

Barry_ Report 30 Nov 2013 05:12

Just saw on the news the footage of two fights at the same time - and I saw the taser operated very briefly.
Truly surprised to hear you say it was a 'lady' who was pulling the trigger.
Yep, this'll be like soccer fan melees from now on.
Apparently a fellow was knifed - in the USA, of course - over a parking spot.

There was also another quite serious incident noted - sadly in my senior moment I cannot for the life of me recall what!

DOH!!

Black Friday ........

................ so named because the retailers make so much money on that one day that it puts their balance sheets in the black :-D

That always makes me wonder just how much they mark up goods if they can offer such huge reductions and make a profit!

Also ................... don't forget that the Americans do not have Boxing Day ............... so they have never had the huge sales that occur in Britain and other Commonwealth countries that do have Boxing Day Sales.

Unfortunately, we have got it in Spain too.
Judging by the news coverage of Barcelona, Madrid & Seville, it was safer to stay at home.
Thank God I´m in Menorca. Christmas frenzy hasn´t hit here yet. It´s still regarded as a mainly religious celebration.

Talking about Americanisms...
......anyone noticed how terms such as 'holiday season' or 'holiday shopping' or just 'the holidays' are creeping into our everyday speech, as opposed to Christmas season, Christmas shopping and Christmas everything else?
Are we being discouraged from saying the word Christmas in case we offend those who do not celebrate it?
I suspect this might be the case. ;-)
