There are some good tips on this link Ann. We have an official card in our door window which states we will call the police if harrassed. We would too!!

I'm surprised all these callers are trying to sell something - 'cos my callers always tell me they are not selling!
I always tell them they want me to enter a process that could end up with me buying the product they mention - therefore they are selling. I then shut the door whilst they are still arguing!

I had that some years ago, three times in a week :-( Anyway a pal of mine was an MD Of an engineering firm As a favour he got me the phone number of the MD of that company (A well Known one) I rang him up at his home at 2am gave him my name and address and told him not to send anymore of his reps to my home or I would continue to call him at that time untill they stopped. It worked, :-D :-D no more callers or Brochures came. :-D :-D

I got pestered time and time again by a conservatory company a couple of years ago.

Let us come and give you a quote
We can provide a discount
Just think of all the extra space

So I gave in. The rep wasn't too happy when he turned up - I live in a second floor flat :-D :-D

We had a young man here recently, wanting money to paint our house number on the kerb.

I told him there was already a number on the kerb, one on the letter box (at the end of the driveway) and one on the house.

He said his numbers were bigger and better!

I said we weren't interested, and he got a bit stroppy!

If I am using the computer I can see who comes to the front door, and I can also peep through the living room window.....if I don't know them I don't answer the door. I'm not being rude, just not wasting my time or theirs.

like Sharron I used to knock on doors for market research - but I think a lot of this is done on line these days (I enjoy doing them from as it were the other side of the clipboard). Probably a more efficient way of completing quotas and cross-sections - with the one great black spot is that there are no non-computer users giving answers!

We live in a cul-de-sac and have Police notices attached to the street lighting at both ends of the street and we were all given stickers to place on front doors ....does it stop them? not on your life! :-S

We don't seem to have market researchers where i live, either that or they don't knock.

It's all charity bags and leaflets for Indian restaurants, upward of 3 a day sometimes and it annoys me that they don't push them all the way through the letterbox so if you are out for the day everyone knows.

Sharron

Sharron Report 6 Dec 2013 18:25

Well, when I was door knocking for market research, you could nearly always bank on getting an interview in a house with one of those signs.

I don't know why but they would nearly always be only too willing to answer.

Some years ago a deaf and dumb man knocked at my door selling dusters, tea towels etc. he presented me with a written card explaining his situation and giving prices of his goods. I bought a couple of dusters that I did not particularly want but I felt sorry for him. As he walked down my drive he dropped something without thinking I called out to tell him, he turned round picked it up and said thanks very much. Deaf and dumb he was not ! He was red faced when he realised what he had done.

Maryanna Report 6 Dec 2013 15:55

We had a sign up a few years back.

A guy rang the bell, can't remember what he was selling, dusters I think.

I pointed to the sign, he ripped it off the wall and threw it at me and went stomping off down the drive.

We only replaced it a few months ago.

Why do they persist though puzzles me . We get double glazing salesmen knocking even though can see we are double glazed !,, when I point this out they then say your porch looks as if it could be replaced . My response is maybe but when WE decide it will be done we will go back to the people who did the windows .

And we did just that this summer and have a new porch tacked on to what didn't need replacing according to our installer. They said why replace what doesn't need doing . Bet not many would be that honest

I have a typewritten notice on my front door along with a police sticker - "Cold callers not welcome"

On my typewritten sign it says -

We do not buy at the door
We require none of the following:

new windows
new drive
new guttering and fascias
new conservatory
trees lopped
no religious groups
no charity envelopes
We do not wish to change utility providers

I use "we" as I do not wish to indicate I live alone

A guy just knocked the door - usual spiel - "we're in the area" - aren't they always!!! and "we're doing some tarmac work" - I stop him and point to the sign on the door - he looks at it and then asks me what it says as he can't read!!! I felt like suggesting that instead of making unwanted calls on people he take himself back to school to learn to read!!

He then says "I don't wish to be rude, but your house needs painting - you really should do something about it"

I shut the door :-D
