Oscar-winning actress Joan Fontaine has died

Oscar-winning actress Joan Fontaine - the star of several psychological thrillers produced by Alfred Hitchcock - has died in California aged 96.

Fontaine - whose real name is Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland - died in her sleep on Sunday in her home in Carmel, her friend Noel Beutel said.

She loved Ireland and Wales. And when Treorchy Male Voice Choir toured California in 1994, she became a big fan and corresponded with them for the rest of her life. Quite an article in the Rhondda Leader this week and some fairly recent photos. She was still stunningly beautiful as quite an old lady. Sounds like a lovely person from the article. RIP.

Elder sister Olivia de Havilland survives her.

Their grandfather was Rev Charles Richard de Havilland (1823-1901). Great grandfather Major Charles de Havilland (1786-1844).

Major Charles was born St Peter Port in CI (son of Peter) and you can trace the de Havillands family back in CI to 16th century at least. Classey ladies with a very distinguished pedigree.
