There are some very good tips on this thread. Will also give the washing up liquid a whirl.
Am curious about the reply you were going to put Sharron, must be funny/cheeky....lol
I haven't worn make up for about 12 years, but still had some old lipstick to shine the Claddagh ring with.

I am not going to put the reply I was going to!

Am very pleased that your ring is shining brightly.

There will be cheap lipsticks about at this time of the year.

Lipstick is just as good as jewellers rouge. It brings up silver a treat.

I have read that butlers who used jewellers rouge on silver would rub it into the cutlery with the ball of their thumb until the item became warm and then buff it off with a chamois.

It is quite therapeutic rubbing a bit of lipstick into some silver with your thumb.

Fred's medals have certainly not been polished out of existence. I buffed them up for his presentation last year and the time they were done before was when I thought I would give them a shine for the fiftieth anniversary of D-Day.

Most of the men who have them seem to have come home and got on with it, consigning their decorations to the cupboard.

the acid in any sauce--red/brown will eventually pit the surface in time and spoil the surface finish --------use----

Jewellers Rouge,,,,,can be bought on *the* auction site,,,,

they only need a yearly dry rub over with a soft cotton cloth if stored well,,,,,,.jewellers never use any metal polishes...

Linda, have a look at this link - it is advice from Dr John Williams-Davies of the National Museum of Wales titled - Looking After your Medals.

Don’t clean at all if they have an attractive and even-coloured ‘patina’, showing that they have never been cleaned and rarely handled.

To be effective, cleaners are all mildly abrasive, so if you must clean, use caution. Avoid Brasso as it too abrasive, Silvo is better. A small amount of toothpaste and a toothbrush also works. Brown sauce is acidic so make sure you leave no traces behind.

Google How to Clean Medals for lots of info.

Try it.

Sharron Report 1 Jan 2014 22:10

I did try metal polish but found that it left deposits in crevices.

A drop of Daddies brought Fred's up a treat.

It just needs wiping on and rubbing off.

Greatly satisfying.

Thank you for your replys I have never heard of brown sauce Sharron love it I would be putting a bit on the medals and a bit in my mouth not much cleaning would get done but might give it a try. Mum has a feeling dad use Brasso so will also give that a try

I don't know what you can safely use at home but before my son marches on ANZAC day here in Australia he has his medals polished at a jewellers. Perhaps they can advise you, Linda.

My mum has given me my dads war medals to look after for my daughter to have one. I can remember my dad cleaning them but for the life of me I cannot remember what he used, if anyone could help I would be very grateful.
