The Government is to pay a train operator to convert first class carriages for use by standard ticket holders to ease overcrowding.

The move is designed to appease passengers angry at being packed into increasingly congested standard class carriages on busy routes.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin is preparing to pay one train company, First Great Western to do away with first class seats that are left empty, Government sources say. If the scheme is a success, it could be expanded to other operators.

The proposal comes on the day passengers face the annual rise in fares, with annual season tickets rising by an average of 3.1%

The way my old brain works is that if a train has nine carriages, and let's say two are first class, why does the taxpayer have to pay a rail company to convert a first class carriage to a standard class carriage - why can't they just remove the first class carriage and replace it with one of the many standard class carriages sitting around the country in railway marshalling yards - sounds like money for old rope to me remove :-S

They could just stick notices on the windows to say 'Second Class' and remove the covers on the seat backs :-)

Well the work involved will be quite a bit

1: take out decent seats, tables & lighting
2: remove any decent panelling
3: replace with crap panelling
4: cram more seats in

Det - there are less seats in a first class carriage, so there is more leg room. :-D
