Budgie Rustler Report 9 Jan 2014 13:29

I remember that tragic event well. I was chatting on CB Radio to truckers on the M1 at the time. Some one came screaming through that a plane had just this minute crashed, hitting the embankment at the side of the motorway.

This was on Channel 19 CB Radio. As CB was at that time rife with Wums most folk listening in thought it was just another windup at the time.

To check for the truth I immediately turned on my scanner and for the next several hours was transfixed listening to live police, ambulance and CB radio reports.

It was utter chaos at first but I was amazed how quickly the emergency services swung into action.
Police blocked off the motorway to stop red necking etc. in fact when a call came in to police headquarters for assistance to a crime in the city the reply was "sorry only 1 vehicle available for the whole of the city, all other police cars attending the air crash".
Truly a terrible event, didn`t realize it was that long ago though.
Thoughts go to all those who lost family and friends. :-(

A friend waved his wife and two sons off on this plane. In Belfast airport was their eldest son who had just returned from a school trip and was waiting to see his mum and two brothers.
I expect he was excited and full of news.

They never arrived.

Thoughts of Jean and her boys, her husband and eldest son.

Dear All

Hello

A Belfast-bound British Midland flight crashed on the M1 in Leicestershire on
8 January 1989, killing 47 people and injuring 74.

The Boeing 737 developed a problem in its left engine shortly after it took off from Heathrow but the pilots mistakenly believed the fault was in the right engine.

They shut down the wrong engine leading to the crash just yards from the runway of East Midlands Airport where it was attempting an emergency landing.

Remarkably nobody on the motorway was hurt.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recommendations made by the accident investigators also led to improvements in pilot training, testing of aircraft and the strengthening of seats and overhead lockers.

These changes provide some comfort to survivors, many of whom are still living with the mental and physical injuries.

Today, flowers were laid at the site and a memorial service was held.

Sincere and respectful wishes
Elizabeth, EOS
