I personally think that the outbreak of the first world should be recognised with thoughtful reflection this august,, and a service of thanks giving in November 2018 acknowledging that this conflict was over in recognition of ALL the people who suffered so much during that period, yes, the Germans too who lets face it had as dreadful a time as anyone else and suffered appallingly in the aftermath of that war, leading to WW11 leading again to terrible suffering on ALL sides. This just my point of view.
My grandfather fought in the first war, and survived 4 years in the trenches with the Ox and Bucks. However he was shell shocked and gassed, not too badly, but enough to shorten his life. My father was killed in the next conflict as was a second cousin, and my stepfather was a POW in the far east. You can see Hitler is not my favourite person!!!

You were clearly not around when Hitler was in power and know little or nothing about the Third Reich, otherwise you would understand that he along with his henchmen, was one of the wickedest people to ever walk this earth, and to compare ANY of our politicians with such a person is, forgive me, just downright ridiculous.

Meant every word of what i said .
Most of the industry sold off abroad ,people trying to make ends meet having to0 run two jobs with no contracts to get a decent wage.
Working class having to get by with less and less help ,while the industry gets tax cuts while the workers have to pay extra, and we are now a laughing stock ,with a navy ,air force and army with part time staff.
All this ,and the government get a huge pay rise ,and live like lords with wine, perks with their [subsidised]meals, wake up and smell the coffee, the Germans lost the war ,and are a damned sight better off than we.

and "Anzacs at Suez"

The avatar I'm using at the moment is a photo I took in 1950 of the

Anzac Memorial at Gebel Maryam on the Suez Canal I was passing

through the canal at the time, lots of info on Google.

All the rest of the allied troops need mentioned as well ,Canadians Americans ,Polish ,Indian ,and Ghurkas ,we would have lost the war without them.

That is a disgrace ,In both world wars we owe a great debt to Oz and New Zealand as well as other people in Australasia ,but it is expected from our Prime minister ,who has done more to destroy Britain in 3 years ,than Hitler did all through the war.
The Aussies i met in my forces years ,were the salt of the earth ,and I can only say sorry for the offence to all. :-(..Fred.

OneFootInTheGrave Report 10 Jan 2014 08:56

If these various reports on the proposed commemorations for the 1914-1918 World War are true - then it is an utter disgrace. The commemorations must include all our allies including Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. However with the current frenzy here in the UK about immigration, it would not surprise me if some elements of the reports are true - it's called electioneering.

As to anything that Maria Miller the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport says, what the Master of the Rolls, the late Judge George Jessel once said, sums up my view of some of her comments - "The human brain is a wonderful organ. It starts to work as soon as you are born and doesn't stop until you get up to deliver a speech" ;-)

At least 3 of my great uncles from Canada(born in England) fought & were killed with the Canadian Expeditionary Force.
If what you are saying is true, they may as well never have existed.
What a b****y insult.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Jan 2014 04:11

oh yes, we will!

I couldn't believe it when I read about it!

Canada's estimated population in 1914 was 7,879,000.

Canada raised an expeditionary force of 620,000 people, total casualties at the end of the war were 67,000 killed and 173,000 wounded, ................. or 39% of those mobilized were casualties.

TaniaNZ

TaniaNZ Report 9 Jan 2014 23:06

It is quite bizarre and will be an enormous insult if carried out
Lots of tooing and fro ing in the media now and a swift meeting with the consular staff
The Canadians will be feeling it too

You'd really think Gove, with all his recent posturing about how children in the UK aren't being taught about the 1st World War 'properly', would have said something wouldn't you?

...or perhaps he only 'knows' what his advisors tell him .....

It has been reported in the news in Australia today that internal government briefings on world War 1 commemorations in the uk to take place this year do not contain Australia or Nz once!
Apparently the idea is to focus on contributions by other countries in the British empire to win political and economic favour amongst multi cultural Britain .
They bloody well better not leave us out !!
With a population of only 1 million we contributed around 100,000
Soldiers
Had 18000 deaths and 60000 wounded
Including a number of my direct family members
The Aussie numbers were just as appalling
ANZACS <3
