You are correct Errol, i actually gave/ lent it to an old lady who lives two doors from us, she had never had a go on a laptop & was interested in having a go, i took it round turned it on & showed her the basics & left her to it, she never used it again but i left it with her, luckily with the help of rollo i have managed to retrieve my password off of that laptop.

Got my laptop back from the menders today & tried the password must have been twenty times but kept being rejected, checked & double checked then suddenly bingo I'm back.

Would it have been wise to at the very least clear cookies etc before giving it away? All sorts of personal information including bank details, passwords, browsing history etc etc could be there for all to see!

So if you are on a different machine how did you log in without a password?

Most any user made password made up of alphabet & numeric characters can be cracked in short order, though rarely by the holder of the account who has forgotten their password.

The password will be forgotten in direct proportion to the probability that the web site uses an old email address no longer available to reset the password.

There is a small freeware program that runs under windows. Run this and drag its windows over the password box. It will immediately show the required password. It works with most browsers, versions of Windows up to Win7 and versions of Office. I thought everybody knew this.

Another answer is to use a password saving app which runs on the same platforms as yr mobile / tablet / PC. The better ones not only remember all the passwords so that you only have one to remember but also generate the sort of passwords that give crackers and GCHQ a headache. The downside of these apps is (a) all the eggs in one basket and (b) can you trust them ?

Philip K Dick had the answer a long time ago.

When my memory has gone, I'll change my password to

"Incorrect". That way when I log in with the wrong password,

the computer will tell me...."Your password is Incorrect"...

You are not constantly logged on, despite what it may appear.

Your password is held on your PC in a file associated with your browser which sends it to GR each time you access the site, giving the impression you have not logged out.

It is possible to access this file but the procedure depends on which browser you are using.

GR can't tell you your password either as they only see an encrypted version. However they can re-set it for you .

Sign out of GR and go to the login page. Click on the "forgotten password" link, put in the email address associated with your GR account and you will automatically be emailed a link to reset your password.

How do i find out what my password is on here ?, sounds odd i know but I've been on here a long time being constantly logged in i can't for the life of me remember what it is, need to change my email address, been to my account but i would have to stab a guess as to the password & if I'm wrong & get logged out then I'm gone for good,

Who said good ?
