Why be nasty???????????????

First part of my post was a respose to the OP question " how do I open it?"
The rest was primarily to ascertain what the OP was trying or hoping to do.

by exporting the file into Excel it is possible to very easily manipulate the data eg list all people named Smith Lincs 1740-1820 and so on and so forth.

also with in Excel it is very easy to make corrections, delete duplicates etc.

Excel will export to .csv format and there are plent of free programs which will import .csv files to GEDCOM

Lots of people do this sort of thing. Get it ?

It's a data file - in a fairly standardised format. If you are merely curious about what it contains, then if using Windows, right click the filename and Open with Notepad. It can be copied into Word/Exel/Etc - but why would you want to do that?

Herewith the first few lines of my latest download:-

0 HEAD
1 SOUR GRUExport
2 VERS 3.0.4682.21313
2 NAME Genes Reunited
2 CORP Genes Reunited Ltd
1 DATE 1 JAN 2014
2 TIME 19:07:29
1 FILE Null family tree.ged
1 GEDC
2 VERS 5.5
2 FORM LINEAGE-LINKED
1 CHAR ANSEL
0 @I43@ INDI

Warning - if you have a few thousand names it is a very long file as there can be more than 10 lines per individual.

Very quick query im sure,.........am I correct in thinking that you can only export your tree on here as a GEDCOM file?.....once exported how do I open it? do I need certain software?

is it possible to export your tree into excel? or other software?

Many thanks in advance.
