Anyone got a Hudl?

O.h. promised me an ipad or similar for Christmas and yesterday saw his sister's Hudl, which she got from Tesco, where she works. She could get me one with her discount off but I am not sure it will be best for me, I really just want to be able to take something with me to use when away and to use in the lounge so I don't have to sit at this main computer all the time. Not so much bothered about reading books on it, altho I might get used to it and all the extra things it does.

I am not very good with technology altho I have taught myself a lot on the computer, but only have a basic phone and not felt the need for more there.

If anyone has a Hudl and can say what they think of them, I would be interested please.

Don't forget, whichever one you have wherever you are will need WiFi Liz.

Not heard any reports on the Hudl.

I am told by my teckie son they are very good value and easy to use. He also works for Tesco so I was looking forward to getting one with his discount.

They were getting rid of old stock last week and he brought me a Lenovo IdeaTab home. That has been easy too (with a lot of help from him to get started ie where is the start button, where is the charging point?) and he paid a ridiculously low price for it. Less that £40!!!

Tesco sell the Hudl so cheap (£119, I think) because they can use a lot of information for marketing purposes eg what we browse, what our interests are. Told they make no profit on them because of that spin-off. Same as the Tesco points - they cost them a small amount, but they pick up a goldmine of marketing stats very easily and cheaply. Bit like the vaults of Appledore in Sherlock last night :-D :-D

I have a friend who was given one recently Liz, and she loves it.

However, I think it rather depends on what you want to use it for and when. Is it for pure entertainment or to keep in touch with what's going on here and there?

My daughter is very 'in' to this sort of thing and, out of the items she possess - ipad, kindle, smartphone etc., she tends to use her phone most, closely followed by her kindle.

I recently exchanged my ordinary phone for a smart phone and I love it because I can do so much on it. When there is no wi-fi available, it has the option of mobile data so that I can still use the internet - (at a small cost though).

It may be worth googling around to see which gizmo meets your needs best. Good luck. :-D

Is it the same as an I Pad?

I have one and love it ,means I can sit down with hubby rather than be on the PC upstairs

Only thing I don't like is the predictive spelling often have to edit posts as it's done a word I didn't type and I missed it .

I am on the I Pad at the moment and access the sites like Ancestry and can copy and paste info over to look up threads I may be searching info for

It is nothing like an iPad though for the money good value. Especially good value if you buy it worh Tesco coupons ( half price ).

Its chief redeeming feature is that it is rugged and children from 7 years up are unlikely to smash it up very quickly. Ditto aged relatives.

Pretty average resolution though and slow, slow oh so slow.

If the budget is tight either get an Arcos or look on eBay for a Nexus.

My advice: wait for the mk2

I have a laptop and a tablet. What a waste of money the tablet was for me!!!

Yes, I can search the internet, get on facebook and play games. But you cannot save anything on a tablet. So I find what I want on my tablet, make a note then go to my laptop to do my genealogical searches again.

If you know someone who may loan you a tablet for a week or so, try to borrow it. See if it does what you want.

I know some people would not be without their tablets.

Me, not too impressed. But play lots of games!!! :-D

Liz, my Granddaughter asks for a hudl, to us it is a cross between a hug and a cuddle and absolutely nothing to do with IT equipment but I know which I prefer. lol. xx

DazedC I have an Ipad and if I want to keep something I email it to myself, this puts it onto my main computer. another way is to get dropbox onto both tablet and computer. Not sure if there is a cost involved for that. I downloaded 'pages' to my IPad, for word processing that cost me about £6.50 for the app for that, so I can write things up then e mail them to myself.

Well,The iPad was the best thing I bought.Have had it over 2 years and rarely use my computer...occasionally to sync etc and clear up mail.
Like Ann in G I email things I want to save.
I use I cloud as well and I have loads of photos, videos, music etc.
Gone are the days of looking up anything I want to know.i just google from wherever I am.
I don't have wifi on it ,but most places like restaurants ,hotels have free wifi.If it doesn't come on automatically, just ask for their password, and once it's on,every time you go to that place,it will come on ..unless they've changed it.
Find it much quicker than computer. Almost instant.
Think it's still the best from what I hear! :-)

Thanks all, will show this to o.h. later as he is better at this than me. He now has an ipad for work but does bring it home and uses it here, also uses it for skype to talk with his son in America and the one who has just moved, means we can see the grandkids and will be able to see the new baby when it arrives in NY

I don't think the Hudl is for me, I don't play games on the computer and won't want to on anything else, just want something like this main computer but portable. The place we are staying has wifi but there is something about a BT card being necessary, so will ask the owner when I ring her to advise eta about that.

Anymore input valued thanks

Liz,mine is an iPad 2 and think they are just as good as the later ones and a lot cheAper than they were.My g grandchildren even have them and think their mum got them on Ebay .she certainly wouldn't pay what I did I 2011 ...think it was £479 then, but shop around.Dont understand about a BT card.you either have wifi or you don't .Most people would want a connection ...not as if you're using their phone!

I expect there is an "Ipad for Dummies" - used to be very reasonable series and helpful (though when I searched for "Open Office for Dummies Amazon quoted £75,didn't need it that much)

Kanji, in our family, a cross between a hug and a cuddle is a 'huggle'.
A Hudi is what 'youff' wear isn't it?
Keeps their ears warm?

.......I'll get me coat.......

I have phoned in for a Which guide to tablets which is free (0800 223 0202) and paid £1 to get a guide to computing sent as well as access to a helpline which I can use straightaway. It I don't cancel my details with them by the end of February I will have to start paying nearly £10 a month to access other Which stuff so will have to remember to do that, in fact I can do it as soon as the guide arrives if I want.

Maybe there will be some clarification on the guide to help me or I will have to go into a store and be baffled by some smart alec sales person lol

I like Huggles too Maggie and Kandj !
