What would you like to do, Walter? Are you wanting to build your tree and swap info with others? Are you wanting to chat about all and sundry - from the weather to books and politics? Are you wanting to help people reserach their family trees?

Walter welcome to the GR community boards,

The best bit of advice i can give is to spend some time looking at the verious threads on the Genealogy Chat, Military Chat and Find Ancestors boards, Just spending time reading these boards will give you a feel for how things work whilst at the same time will alert you to other web sites that are available for your research including several that are FREE

If you need help with finding a particular name or family then post on the relevant board, giving as much info as possible, but be mindful that this is an open site so be carefull when posting about relatives who may still be living.

Hello Walter, welcome to GR.

Yes, it can be a frustrating hobby, but it can also be incredibly enjoyable and totally addictive once you get going.
I have two bits of advice I can offer to a newcomer.

1. Have patience. You can't research and build a family tree in any short space of time. Most of us GR members have been working on our trees for years and STILL have gaps where we can't find a person we want...that's the nature of this hobby, whilst also making it all the more rewarding when you do find who you're looking for.

2. If it's the GR boards you're frustrated with, then I would suggest just as Porkie Pie has, - ie take your time and read through the different boards to see how they work, what sort of things people ask, and what answers come up. I read them for weeks before I posted my first request for help, it's amazing what you can learn from them and the valuable information they contain.

Don't be afraid to ask, we were all beginners once. :-)
