I think Maggie that often people didn't associate 1p being worth 2.4 old pence

or nearly tuppence ha'penny
as in the double bounty bar which WAS 9 pence but became 4p

which equates to nearly 10 pence

I don't like it when people say P instead of pence, after all we didn't used to say D did we.
And the pre decimal coins had nick / pet names, the " new " currency doesn't which I think is a sign that no one wanted or liked it.

Of course, everything went up in price when they got rid of the half pence.

Bob - you forgot the shilling - a 'Bob' and sixpence - a 'Tanner', and Thruppence - 'Half a Tanner'.

4 farthings to a penny
two farthings to a halfpenny
2 half pennies were a penny
a threepence piece ....half a tanner......
a sixpence was a tanner
12 pennies to a shilling or a bob
two shillings were a florin
2 and a half shillings were half a crown or a half dollar
5 shillings for a while was known as a dollar
a 10 shilling note was half a bar
something fake was known as "bent as a nine bob note"
20 shillings or 240 pennies was a pound

and not forgetting the guinea

1 pound and one shilling.

and as with today prices were often 19 shillings 11 pence and three farthings

under a pound
except today its 99p

I well remember the gasman coming to empty the gas meter
counting out pennies into 5 shilling bags, very quick at spotting the foreign(mainly irish pennies) which we often got back as part of the rebate

The current £2 coin came at about the turn of the century but there was a sort of proto-type in about 1986.

Yes I know what Elizabeth meant but it was not what was put in the original post.

In the early 70's, we would drive or take the train to hastings or eastbourne for a day out. We would go on the pier and get 50p worth of half pennies to play on the ammusements. Boy they lasted for ages and we had so much fun.

I do have a farthing, threepennybit, sixpence, florin, shilling, old penny and halfpenny, an old blue £5.00 note and a ten shilling note.

Pre decimalisation, I got sixpence for my pocket money. When we went decimal in 1971 my mum gave me a new 5p. Didnt tell her she had doubled my pocket money lol. Those were the days weren't they?

I do remember you could get sweets out of the local newsagents for about
5 and a half pence.

Rounded up, it became 6p!!

To much for the small persons sweet allowance!

Pence Glitter - but I still call them pennies

i collect old English coins, they are fascinating..i have some dating back to the 1700's.
just holding them or cataloging them makes me think about all the people that must have had them before me

Next you will be telling us their were 4 farthing to a penny ;-) but we all know that a penny farthing only has two wheels :-D

I too recall using farthings with the picture of a Wren? on the reverse.

So who is going to own up to remembering the Groat? ;-)
