You don't need a url.
Open Chrome
top right click on tools button - grey with 3 horiz lines
choose settings then extensions
then "get more extensions"
enter "adblock" into the search box
the main adblock has a large white hand on a red background like a US roadf sign
choose it and there you go.
There are derivatives of this which deal with FaceBook annoyances and so on but I have never tried them.

Thank you Rollo. I will give some thought to your suggestions.
IE7 was on my pc when I bought it 2years ago and I have been quite happy with it until these problems with GR occurred, no problems on any other site. I only use the Microsoft toolbar.

Sadly it is people who are not very pc savvy who get bitten, the same way as people who don't know much about cars buy lemons and those who know little about far away places end up with dodgy holidays. That's Life as it is sometimes said.

Anyway damage limitation.

If you must use InternetExplorer ( why ? ) any computer that can run IE7 will run IE8 which is quite a bit better being more secure and more in touch with modern web sites. Even better UG to IE9 if you can. IE10 and up are ok.
When running IE REMOVE any toolbars except those from Microsoft.

MICROSOFT DO NOT SUPPORT OLD BROWSERS INCLUDING SECURITY HOLES THEY EXPECT YOU TO UPGRADE AS IT IS FREE

BETTER

If you can't run IE10 install any of Chrome, Firefox, Opera.
Chrome interface is a big change from the others but it is much faster on old machines. Firefox is the nearest to IE to use. Opera has just issued a new version which is the dogs b-x and easily best browser. All these are free.

AdBlock does what it says. You can always create exceptions for web sites you favor and trust. I do.
NoScript stops scripted programs from running, period. Some sites will run just fine even with noscript on. If you have a problem just click on the options button and grant permission either permanently or for the moment. I have used NS to block Google advertising scripts which speeds things up no end. It doesn't stop Google ads but it does stop Google profiling me :-)

The best thing though about NoScript is that script based advertising attacks don't even get started. Much better than rooting around for hours and days trying to fix the damage or taking yr machine to a fixer who will charge £ 50-100 and like as not just do a fresh install/recovery and lose all yr data.

there you go
:-D

As I have been a member for approx. 10yrs I well remember the previous problems, it would seem that they need to look into their advertising again. I said in Roy's thread "What 'up with GR" that I thought it was certain adverts.
I am using IE7, would it ok to use AdBlock and No Script., I am not very computer savvy! Having said that I don't see why we should have to.
Thanks Joan

Does DC Thompson really need to generate income via this site with ads that just annoy and to my knowledge are not taken up by GR members.

These companies who throw ads at this site just seem to be wasting their money.

In the past when GenesRU was owned by ITV there was quite a serious malware attack. This came not from GenesRU but the advertising server that they used at the time. For some time now GenesRU have used Unamis, a sub. of Orange.

Many people will perhaps be unaware that GenesRU does not itself host any ads and has little control over ad content. What happens is that GenesRU sends data to Google ad services and using this the adserver company directs ads to its clients eg GenesRU.

Many of these ads contain javascript, and multimedia. The adserver company is supposed to QA them but in practice checking is minimal and automated. Sometimes Breaking Ad scores.

For these reasons I have suggested that using AdBlock and NoScript together consign all these problems to oblivion especially if you have a slow ( under 6 Mb/sec ) connexion. IE9 or earlier is very insecure especially if any non-Microsoft toolbars are installed.

The failure of GenesRU to effectively use its content to generate advertising and references in other sites is the major reason for its current woes.

good luck

Very strange that I was on this site when the 3 infections occurred. I have not used any external device. This afternoon, in particular, was the only site I had been on.
I have emailed GR.

While using this site at 4 00pm today my AV notified me of an infection. I had the Trojan Win32/Ramnit A. This is the 3rd Trojan from this site in less than a fortnight.
I shall not me using this site until it is cleaned up !
