As FTM and Ancestry can talk to each other directly, there is no need to use gedcom files.

Once you have a tree in Family Tree Maker, you can upload it to Ancestry by clicking Upload and Link to Ancestry from the Plan workspace.

Or if you already have a tree on Ancestry, you can download and link it to Family Tree Maker by clicking Download a tree from Ancestry in the New Tree view of the Plan workspace.

Once linked, the Online Sharing panel will display the synchronization status of the two trees.

You then have thee options to manage the sync.

Automatic:-
Each time you open or close FTM

Manual:-
Only when you press the Sync button (My preferred way as it avoids having to wait each time you launch or close FTM

None:-
Breaks the link and your two trees go their independent ways. You can no longer re-link and would have to go through the upload or download process again.

To delete a tree on FTM you no longer require,

Click the menu on the Workspaces toolbar, click the tree you want, then click Delete tree.

or

Click Plan > New Tree > select the tree you want in the Open an existing tree list > Options > Delete Tree.

(Above notes are all taken from the Help Pages of FTM 2014. Earlier versions might be slightly different)

Which FTM version do you have ? I uploaded my tree to ancestry from my FTM 2006?version
when I installed FTM 2012 on my nrew laptop it asked if I wanted to download the tree from ancestry and I accepted and it downloaded it and put it into the new tree format of FTM 2012

I didn't have to create a gedcom .

I have had FTM for about 7 months now and it has never synced properly with my Ancestry tree.
I have disconnected the sync and have created the gedcom but am now stuck.
How do I delete the corrupted tree on Ftm?
How do I get back to the page on Ancestry which shows the Gedcom?
I need an idiots guide to proceed from there.
