Graham, If the egg sinks to the bottom, it's fresh. If the egg sinks to the bottom, but stands on its point, it's still good but needs to be used soon. If the egg floats to the top, it needs to be discarded.

I have a knife whichyoumaynotuse. It comes from Lakeland and has a knife blade on one and a swinging peeler blade on the other.

It is the only peeler I can use any sense and I guard it with my life.

Graham.........it's something like that

I can't remember which one does what......... the bad/good ones either float or sink.............

that's why I break them into a cup before I use them.

I was once told that if you put an egg in a pan of water and it floated, it meant that the egg had gone off. I'm not sure if that is just an old wives tale or not...

I don't keep my eggs in the fridge - am I strange?
Because they're on the worktop, I know eggsactly (snigger) how many I have.

I've got a rice cooker (I think). Round stainless steel thing.
No idea how to use it, and I rarely eat rice.

Had to go out and try to find a decent veg knife the other week.
I lost the one I'd had for over 20 years and couldn't cope!! :-(
The one I bought isn't the same though.
Never mind, give it another 5 years.......

I have a potato ricer, I have no idea what it does, a friend, who likes gadgets gave it to me for a birthday.

It is a nice shape and a shiney stainless steel, but I have never used it. Looks like it could be a nightmare to clean too. I have no idea what riced (?) potatoes look like, are they like mashed ? If so what's wrong with a good old masher !!!!?

The gadget I use most is a jar opener I got free with a knife I bought from a market stall in 1972 for about 20p. It is adjustable, fits any size jar, even those big, Polish sweet and sour cucumbers Himself likes, has Bottle opener on one end and a can opener on the other. Could never replace it if it broke.

Yeah know what you mean about blunt knives, I bought a set of stainless steel Kives in a block, Viners,

absolutely (well nearly) useless wont hold an edge and am forever trying to tune them up

if we bought all the gadgets we'd need another house to keep them in.

I've got a drawer full of saucepans & frypans that can boil & poach eggs, cook rice & pasta and anything else I feel like eating. I have a food processor, a mixer & a stick-mixer, a sandwich press & a halogen oven. The only "gadget" I have is a pie maker, which I use a lot (hardly ever for pies, I make quiches & frittata in it).

I probably have more knives that most people. I think I have thirty knives! They are all kept very sharp (blunt knives are dangerous)

I have an electric egg boiler,

use it now and again,

after I boiled two eggs, let the pan run dry, eggs exploded and the pot disintegrated........

Maryanna

Maryanna Report 18 Feb 2014 10:27

My son in law decided one of those egg boilers would be a good gift for my daughter.

I think it is still, unused in the box, at the back of a cupboard somewhere.

I have had one for forty years, made of metal, you put water and eggs in it, bring it to the boil, keep an eye on a clock for four minutes...............

I found an egg dated December 18th in the fridge the other day.

I am often still using eggs a month or so past the 'best before' date. I get only 6 at a time. *memo to self, have eggs for dinner tonight*.

:-(

I always break eggs into a separate container before mixing them into anything, or cooking them.

This gadget is another way to get your money!
