Dettol Mould and Mildew remover is good ,just spray on, leave for a few minutes then wipe , the mould seems to just dissolve away.
We had some black old mould on the tile grouting under the washing machine ,left the spray on for about five minutes and it had all gone !!

If its the sealant that's gone black between the window and the window sill you can buy anti fungus sealant .

Trish ~ I have no idea where you would get clove oil in the UK (I'm assuming that's where you are).

I'm in Australia. Clove oil is available in most pharmacies/chemists and health food shops. If a shop sells essential oils (used on pot-pourri etc) it should have clove oil (make sure it's 100% clove oil, not some watery mixture). A 10ml bottle costs about $9... but it lasts for months as you only need a few drops in a bottle of water.

Don't be tempted to taste it, cos it's poisonous!!

I also use it on outside blinds......... those plastic ones "bistro blinds".

I just googled Where can I buy clove oil in uk and one site mentioned Boots, other chemists, and even supermarkets. You can use it on toothache, on a piece of cotton wool onto the tooth altho best not to leave it too long or it makes your gums sore and the skin peels off! It is also, interestingly, used for euthanising fish painlessly. Not sure how but better than flushing them down the loo while still alive.

Yikes Liz, that's scary..... putting it on a tooth I mean.

Any bottles I have state clearly that it's poisonous.

:-(

Re steamy kitchens......... don't you have exhaust fans?

I can remember clove oil for toothaches. I will have to check down the farmacia to see if they do clove oil (that´s if Pepe is going to speak English to me)

Stella that is interesting about the Astonish Mould and mildew spray because I looked at that on Monday at the English market. Glad I didn´t get it now.

I like the Dettol idea but not sure I have seen that around here, not something you notice unless looking for it.

At this rate Ann I might end up filling your suitcase up !
:-D

Off track but my Dad used to use Clove oil on his teeth, for some reason, best known to himself, he told Mum it was for his corns.

I think it was something they used in France for toothache. ( he was brought up there )

I remember being woken up one night by Mum making a commotion. She had found Dad putting his " corn " medicine on his tooth.

He never lived it down but it still didn't encourage him to go to the dentist.

Up till now, I have always used a dilute mixture of bleach and water to clear mould, have now got a few alternatives to try.

Let us know what you go for and how you get on Ann.

M.

My Dad also used clove oil for toothache. I might try to get hold of some oil of clove and also the Astonish oven cleaner when I go into town. Meanwhile I could also try the vinegar again although I didn't find that very successful last time I tried.

the mould i am trying to get rid of is round the bath ( my own fault for covering the vent because a gale blows through it), so last night i tried the Astonish spray again and left it on all night, this morning there is a very slight improvement in that the mould is still there but has turned from black to brown..

I don't think i will use this spray again, a waste of money. :-(

Hi Stella

Black to brown is a good sign

Keep going with it and it will turn orangy next and slowly fade until its gone

Watered bleach is the best, in my opinion

bleach takes the colour out of the mould, but the spores are still there.

Mould is in the air...... worse when it's damp or humid.

Clove oil kills the mould spores (that's what I was told).

I got put off using bleach a few years ago....... splashed it around then wiped at it with a sponge...the sponge disintegrated!

Just read this

Mold Removal with Bleach
Bleach can kill virtually every species of indoor mold that it comes into contact with, along with its spores, leaving a surface sanitized and resistant to future mold growth.

Unfortunately, however, using bleach is only effective if the mold is growing on non-porous materials such as tiles, bathtubs, glass and countertops. Bleach cannot penetrate into porous materials and so it does not come into contact with mold growing beneath the surface of materials such as wood and drywall. Using bleach on these materials will kill the mold above the surface but the roots within the material will remain and the mold will soon return

It's always worked for me! Here are some other methods if you don't like using bleach

•Bleach

•Borax

•Vinegar

•Ammonia

•Hydrogen peroxide

•Detergent

•Baking soda

•Tea tree oil

•Grapefruit seed extract

I remember my dear mum using oil of cloves, when she had a toothache, perhaps it must have been a different lotion then.
It came in a small bottle, with a rubber top, used for so many drops on cotton wool.
I will try some other remedies mentioned.
Will keep you posted.

The info I got re toothache relief came from a site I found when I googled and it seemed up to date advice so obviously an old remedy continued. You could always ask the pharmacist when you go into your local chemist.

Ann, that ovencleaner is in a squat blue tub.
