I recently changed my car and tel my insurance company. The engine size was the same and all other details, ie named driver etc stayed the same so they put the new car reg, make and model and sent me a new document. No charge or changes.

It says on my insurance"the policy holder" with the owners permission may drive any other car under 3rd party cover. So I could borrow a family members car if they let me and my policy covers me.

So you are saying that this will be phased out, how ridiculous and why?

So when the traffic wardens police our car parks in town, they no longer will be looking at each one to check the tax discs, making their jobs a lot easier. Also they wont be catching anyone then will they who hasnt got tax as they dont have instant access to check!

So the DVLA will send you a reminder and then you can pay online, PO or D/D but you wont get a paper disc just a receipt say from the PO, it will seem strange.

Never understand why changes happen but there's no real benefit.

You know the saying"if it's not broken, don't try to fix it!"

Merlin, I don't trust ANY Government body or department,..... Fact

Things only ever change if Government can gain financially,

Note to self;.... must remember to remove the Guinness beer mate out of my tax disc holder:-D

Roy ;-)

i have a tax disc that runs from today until the end of Feb 2015, it would feel very strange not to display one.. :-)

PP.Do you really trust the DVLA, I was pulled over by the Police and according to them (Via the dvla) I had no insurance,Fortunatly I could prove that I had, their system is Crap and lots of people have had to be inconvenienced by it. it stinks and is just to increase revenue for them.you lose a months road tax,and the other person pays for the month you have lost, doesnt sound a lot but multiply that by a few million(Car Sales etc) and it adds up to a considerable amount of cash. plus the money that Insurance people want for changing retails. As I stated, The motorist is being taken for a Patsy once again.

I think the phasing out of the way insurance use to work is all part of the same thing,

It saves the police from having to validate your insurance if your pulled up whilst driving someone elses car on your own policy,

As a named driver they don't have that problem plus it makes insurance companies money in extra premiums paid to have a named driver on your policy

quite so.......Roy..........

but I didn't know about your last paragraph tho'

Bob, Ref, Your insurance is valid for a borrowed car,

Only if the borrowed car has a valid insurance policy in place, and then your only insured third party unless you have a taders policy

The last time i renewed my insurance i checked the new policy and to my horror i was no longer covered to drive my wifes car on my policy, I rang them and was told that ALL insurance companies are now insisting that only named drivers are to be covered on a car insurance policy and the old system of allowing third parties to drive a car owned by another person providing both the car owner and the car borrower have their own policy is being phased out

Roy

Bobtanian Report 27 Feb 2014 14:24

so another thing, doing the direct debit thing...........you die or become unable to drive and your tax still comes out of your bank(unless you are, or your dependants are aware) and stop the D/D

I will still wait for the DVLA to send me the reminders

so they take your money and you don't have a hard visible receipt?

and as old bill admit, their database is NOT always up to date....Dodgy methinks.....

NO they DONT need cars, going through a average speed check will flag up dodgy Cars as will all these So called traffic monitoring cameras.....T'other day A1 (m) ..went past a traffic cop parked up on a motorway on-slip road.........ANPR.......

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 27 Feb 2014 14:18

They don't need any (Extra) cars, They don't catch every one all the time but they are getting close to catching them all, I see cars parked all over the place with the police stickers on stating it has been seized, i've witnessed it several times in my travels,

If you are changing your car or buying a new car then you would still need to have insurance in place for the new car regardless of the changes to the road tax in order to drive that vehicle legally

most cars I have bought have been "through the family" and fortunately all has gone well,

ie try it out, if you like it, buy it! my insurance is valid for a borrowed vehicle......

and that gives time to get the future paperwork done, in my case transferring everything on a particular date, including changing over number "preferred" reg. plates.

but that likely wont work, in the future...

Merlin

Merlin Report 27 Feb 2014 13:39

I know that PP. but how many cars (Extra) will they need,? apart from the MOT, they will also have to have Valid Insurance which will have to be either transferred to the new vehicle or a new policy taken out, which as you know will cost you for the change of details.Either way the Motorist is going to be Stung yet again.**M**.

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 27 Feb 2014 13:33

Bobtanian, you can tax the car over the phone or internet at the time of purchase.

assuming it has a valid MOT certificate

Roy

You would need to make sure your insurance was valid for the new car before you drive it anyway

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 27 Feb 2014 13:28

Merlin, The police don't need to check if any car is taxed,

They have the ANPR system in police cars that auto read car registration numbers and flags up a cars status if the car is not Tax,Tested or Insured

All vehicle details are on their data base

That's gonna be bloody awkward, innit!! if buying from a distance how you going to get it home to get the docs in order?

blinky stoopid government again

Merlin

Merlin Report 27 Feb 2014 13:19

Yes I read that PP. crafty of them ,when selling the remaing tax can be reclaimed from the DVLA. However as you probably know, you lose a Months Tax when you do that.Just another fiddle, and are the Police going to check every car to see if its Taxed? I think not,Personally,**M** I dislike the Idea.

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 27 Feb 2014 13:04

From 1 October 2014, the paper tax disc will no longer be issued and required to be displayed on a vehicle windscreen,

What people don't know is that if you buy your car after that date any remaining Tax on the vehicle is no longer valid and the new owner will need to Tax the vehicle before they can drive it on the road

"When selling a vehicle to a new vehicle keeper, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferable. Vehicle tax will end when a vehicle is sold and the new keeper will need to get the vehicle taxed immediately before the vehicle can be used."

From https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-changes

Just letting you know
