Libby, try not to worry too much I had a similar problem and had to have scan etc, it turned out to be a twisted optic nerve no treatment needed but have to be checked every6 months, I think it is. Then I developed blepharitis, so having to use drops etc

It's so worrying when our sight is under threat

Ok. Updated 28th Jan 2015.

Just after my last post my vision was worse then ever. It turned out that I had a bleed behind my eye. Referred to St Paul's In Liverpool. After a couple of visits they discharged me .... no new tear and the bleed was "going down", told to continue with my check ups at Bangor. Appointment at Bangor with a new Consultant the following week .... found damage to the optic nerve. Possibly Glaucoma. Wanted me to come back for further tests. Shocked with this because my eye pressure had always been within normal limits and they had been told during every appointment that my brother has Glaucoma.

Attended Bangor today. Optic nerve damage confirmed but they don't think it is Glaucoma. Possible that high blood pressure has caused damage .... no is hasn't. blood pressure has always been ok, last taken in December 2014. Ok.... then possibly diabetes ..... no other signs. Cholesterol ???? .... that's ok too.

End result .... sent for blood tests and I am awaiting an appointment for a brain scan :-0

Came home and went onto Google ...... VERY quickly came off. Scary stuff :-(

Will await results from ALL tests and go from there.

In the meantime I am enjoying my second glass of NZ sauvignon blanc a day early because I think I deserve it :-) Don't normally have a drink these days unti Thursday night because I am normally in work but have booked this week off.

Please excuse any typos .... I have checked three times xx

Update.

This "getting old malarkey" is driving me nuts :-(

My vision has still not cleared.

More "lights" three weeks ago. Another emergency referral for retinal tear, followed by three clinic appointments at the eye clinic. Told each time "no tear". Last visit ... "we will refer you to the "laser consultant" .... he said "yes, there is a tear but it is not leaking. We will monitor it, we will send for you in about three weeks",

They will not laser it probably, because it is too close to the original scarring.

In the mean time, the floaters are worse and my vision is reduced to about 25% in my right eye.

My job is at risk although my boss has been ok about my appointments but in the mid/long term .... who knows!!

Excuse any typos ... this post has taken me about 20 minutes to type.

I'm going to the eye hospital next week...think it may be the same one Libby?

. Have been going for about 12 years, but mine is a mole behind one eye that is near the optic disc and they keep a check on it as if it grows it would blind me...so far so good.
It is a very good hospital and I believe the consultant I have there is one of the best in the country .
2 of my friends have had laser recently for cataracts and very successful.
I now have hospital transport as I live alone and can't drive after having eyes dilated.

Come on Libby...think positive..I'm sure you will find there will be a big improvement soon. :-) :-)

Quick update on my check up today. Doctor seemed quite happy with the results. They are going to send me another clinic appointment to keep a check on it.

At the moment my vision is quite blurred in the affected eye. The only way I can describe it is that someone has put greasy finger marks on my specs. Apparently this should improve after about four months. Unfortunately it looks like the floaters are here to stay but eventually I will be able to ignore it.

All good news as far as I am concerned because I was pretty worried it would lead to a detachment and the loss of sight in that eye. Ever the pessimist, I am.

Came home looking like a bushbaby again ;-)

Poor you Libby, hope things settle soon and you will be ok.

I was told a few years back that I had a retinal tear and if the flashes got worse or any other symptoms happened to go straight to A & E but touch wood, have been ok since. I am waiting to see the specialist for a check up tho as my optician was concerned at the pressure in my eyes, but the specialists looked at the info and marked me none urgent so have had to wait some time. I was told it would be about 20 weeks but when I rang last week to see how far along the list I was, the secretary said they had had clinics cancelled so were a bit behind and people coming new to the list were being told there was a 32 week wait. She said if they continue to have the catch up clinics they have started, I might be seen in around 10 weeks. I was referred during November. Just hope they don't find glaucoma or any other problems but eyes feel ok.

Libby ~ your "floaters" sound a bit like my migraine, my lights were usually silvery & blue.

I had them for years (some days I had to go to bed in a dark room), they're not painful, but very annoying because they sent me almost blind, constant "flashing lights", and no warning of when it was going to happen.

My GP eventually sent me to a neurologist, I am now permanently on tablets, they've helped enormously, but I get the odd "flash".

Just what you need, a migraine on top of your eye problems.

Worth checking it out.

Thanks for the replies folks. I have suffered with floaters on and off for the last four years or so, not very often and they only lasted for about 12 hours or there abouts. On Thursday night they started again but I had lights as well. Read up on them again but wasn't unduly worried because "my" lights were not like lightening but were yellow and moved up and down. Went to opticians on Friday morning who did tests, photos etc and then told me to go straight to the eye clinic "NOW" because I had a retinal tear. An hour and a half bus ride later I arrived at the clinic who carried out similar tests and then sent me straight for the laser treatment.

I know a lot of people moan about the NHS but I could not have received any better or quicker treatment if I had "gone private".

Only drawback was that I looked like a bushbaby after all of the drops to dilate my pupils ;-)

The success rate on repair of retinal tears is good.
The floaters may take a while to become less noticable.
You tend to learn to live with them.
This is a totally different procedure to the lazer eye surgery for correction of vision.

I get regular laser treatment for leaking veins in both my eyes and floaters are a daily problem, and my eye surgeon waits about a month before she checks how well the laser treatment has worked.

In addition to the leaking veins problem, I have recently been diagnosed with what is called posterior vitreous detachment (the jelly in the retina at the back of the eye has broken away and is blurring my vision) and this may be what is causing my floaters.

I am waiting to have this treated by an injection recently approved by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) and hopefully this will fix the retina problem and get rid off or reduce the floaters.

Have a read of this regarding floaters:-

Libby ~ my brother had lazer eye surgery some years ago.

He was a bit "wobbly" for a few days, but he recommends it to everyone. He had it done so that he could stop wearing glasses.

When the surgery was over, the staff gave him a video tape of the operation, which he took great delight in showing to everyone....... most of them ran out of the room. :-(

I hope everything worked fine for you. <3

I had to have emergency laser eye surgery on Friday to correct a retinal tear. Still suffering from "floaters" and it is driving me crackers. Does anyone know how long this will last. I have to go back to the eye clinic on Monday to have it checked out but I am feeling a bit paranoid in case the treatment hasn't worked :-(
