I have seen spiders webs stretched between corn stubble right across a field when the sun was setting and it was truly gorgeous but, even having read about it in books at school and certain novels, I have never seen gossamer.

Have you ever seen it?

What do you mean by gossamer?
I always thought the webs were made of gossamer.
Do you mean fine length of web the spider uses to swing from place to place, or the web baby spiders are kept in?

The definition of gossamer is quite specific and doesn't really mean much

oh yes, just googled it
'A fine, filmy substance consisting of cobwebs spun by small spiders, seen especially in autumn.'

One of the problems with moving around a lot - different words for the same things :-D

That's a lovely photo, BR.

I have a big web near the garage and it's quite beautiful after rain when the sun comes out.

Of course I am familiar with spider webs, I have a house full of them, but I always understood gossamer to be bits of web blowing about in the morning.

It must be like the gauze that Pete and Dud discussed. You don't see that blowing about any more.
