is dangerous!

It EMPTIED three folders!

One is family photographs I received from a 2nd cousin in NZ, the other two are documents received from cousins in the UK.

The information is all on my genealogy program, but the photo's are now in cyberspace.

I checked the recycle bin, not there, not in the deleted file either.

Any ideas on how to retrieve the info?

I am not happy with Outlook since they redesigned Hotmail. It is nowhere as good as it used to be.

Sorry I cant help you.

If you Google there are loads of suggestions. Try something like:-

"recover lost emails after compacting outlook express"

Huia, not Outlook that replaced Hotmail, the original Outlook Express.

IGP, I did google, anything I found didn't work....... or led me to a site that was either useless or wanted lots of money.

:-(

You said their was nothing in the recycle bin and nothing in the deleted files, just a thought, maybe they are hidden, not sure what system you are using but I use Windows 7 and I can change the file attributes in Control Panel > Folder Options > View - from "don't show hidden files, folders, or drives" to "show hidden files, folders, or drives"

You will have to set "Folder Options" to "view hidden files, system files" for this to work.

Outlook Express keeps its .dbx files in a folder here:
c:\documents and settings\[user name ]\application data\identities\[ UID ]

User name will be tom, dick, harry, scozz etc ; UID will be a long unique mix of letters and numbers. The .dbx files are in this folder.

There is a bug with XP and SP3 which causes the access to the .dbx files to vanish after "compacting". NEVER allow this!

The easiest way to fix the problem is to back up the .dbx files. Then create a new identity eg Scozz2 and logon with the new identity. Copy the saved dbx files into the new location and you should be good to go. The address book is in a .wab file ( wab = windows address book ).

Outlook Express is a (very) lightweight email client and should not be used for archiving or holding large message stores. It has limits on file size and storing lots of image attachments is a sure way to bust it. Use something else e.g. Outlook. Outlook can import data from OE.

Thankyou All <3

I'll show this to Himself, who is much more computer savvy than I am.

I won't try it tonight, because we've just got in from a day at the golf club (a few drinkies were involved :-D )......... I'll try tomorrow, and let you know the result.

I hope it's a good one!

:-D
