So they fly all that way alone....??

How does a very young bird know how to do that?

Graham

Graham Report 1 May 2014 21:11

I've never seen a flock of cuckoos :-S

I think I heard that cuckoos, which lay in a particular type of bird's nest can alter the colour of their eggs depending on the 'host' bird.

How do young cuckoos know that they have to fly south? Do they set off alone or do they congregate and take off in a flock?

...Something to ponder........

There's loads of goldfinches around here at the moment. It makes me wonder if it's their nests that the cuckoos usually commandeer. :-S

I too heard one this week, - think it was Monday and in the distance.

I've listened each day since, but haven't heard it again yet.

I did see 8 newly hatched cygnets locally on Tuesday. OH says they hatched on Monday afternoon.
Hope they manage to rear them.
