I was lucky enough to see Princess Margaret's wedding from the windows of Middlesex Guildhall which is opposite the Abbey.

We saw her getting into the coach after the wedding.Great view. We also had lunch at the guildhall so a great day.
Elizabeth - thank you for reminding me.
Take care

I was a teeny tiny newborn when Roger Bannister got his record

We didn't have a TV for Princess Margaret's wedding, but at 6 it would have been wasted on me anyway :-)

I still can't get my head round the skill in building the tunnel and wonder why it hasn't been squashed by the sea :-S :-S

I was in hospital when Roger Bannister ran his race, I was 10years old at the time and two of the nurses had the race on the radio and just before the finish the Matron came marching down the ward and off went the radio. I had to wait until following day to find out what all the fuss had been about.

Dear All

Hello

Hope you are okay.

6th May was a very busy day for news events:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1954, Roger Bannister, a 25-year-old British medical student,
became the first man to run a mile in less than four minutes.

His time was 3mins 59.4 seconds, achieved in Oxford.

The event was watched by about 3,000 spectators.

With just over 200 yards from the finish, Mr Bannister took the lead with a final burst of energy.

He sprinted to the line in record time and fell exhausted into the arms of a friend, the Rev Nicholas Stacey.

Pandemonium broke out when spectators heard news that Bannister had officially beaten the four-minute mile.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1960, Princess Margaret married photographer Anthony Armstrong Jones
in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

More than 20 million viewers tuned in to watch the first ever televised royal wedding service.

Thousands lined the streets of central London to witness the
Queen's younger sister get married.

Princess Margaret, 29, made her journey from Clarence House
in the Glass Coach with the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Princess wore a white silk dress and a diamond tiara.

She was followed by her eight bridesmaids, with the Queen's eldest daughter, Princess Anne taking the lead.

After the ceremony, the couple made their way back to Buckingham Palace and appeared on the balcony with the rest of the royal family.

The newly weds then made their way to the Battle Bridge Pier on the Thames,
to board the Royal Yatch Britannia for their honeymoon in the Carribean.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

20 years ago, The Queen and President Francois Mitterrand of France
formally opened the Channel Tunnel during two elaborate ceremonies
in France and Britain.

The tunnel is the first land link between Britain and Europe since the last Ice Age about 8,000 years ago.

However, the construction of the tunnel ran up huge debts and went way over budget.

There was also the human cost too.

Ten workers were killed between 1987 and 1993 whilst working on the project.

May these workers rest in peace.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Take gentle care all
Best wishes
Elizabeth,
xx
