+++DetEcTive+++ Report 11 May 2014 10:15

Haven't watched it for years

- Can't hear the lyrics (my problem, not the fault of the performers)
- Its all political block voting.

AnnCardiff Report 11 May 2014 09:45

Like you Bob - I just tuned in to the last of the votes - never watch it nowadays as it's not about singing or songs, it's all political

and as Island says - he's a fella - and I've heard better voices on BGT and in karaoke bars

Molly did well, she has a good voice and we didn't do as badly As usual in the voting so well done her. We won't win these days it is too political.

Conchita had a good voice and I have nothing against transvestites in dresses or people who do drag acts. I think it is the beard that makes people feel uncomfortable, but I guess it is a statement. But I did think the voting for her song was genuine not because of who she was. With the exception of Sweden and The Netherlands the competition wasn't great.

I hoped The Netherlands would win. I liked their voices and song.

Well l must admit there was no need for all the circus acts and weird staging props etc....the songs were the usual boring (most of them) Eurovision type songs....but the winner was good, she has a really good voice. Ours was'nt bad either but l doubt we will ever win again!!

jude :-D

I gave up on Eurovision years ago but I've just heard the song on the news and it seems pleasant enough. The singer has a great voice.

Who cares what he/she looks like? it's a song contest not a fashion show.

Thomas "Tom" Neuwirth (born 6 November 1988), better known as the drag persona Conchita Wurst, is an Austrian singer. Wurst represented Austria and won the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The singer uses female pronouns for herself when in the role of Wurst.

Biography: Neuwirth states that he was born in Gmunden, Austria, in 1988. Conchita stated in an interview in 2013 that she was frequently scared of being bullied in school for being gay, even to the point of 'avoid[ing] going to the school's toilets during breaks'
Before taking up a drag persona Neuwirth worked as a shop window decorator, but first appeared in public media in an advertisement in 2006.[citation needed]

In 2007, Neuwirth reached the final of the 2007 Austrian casting show Starmania. In 2011, Neuwirth returned to television in drag as "Conchita Wurst", a persona created in response to the experiences from his earlier life: "This is about an important message, it's call for tolerance for everything that seems different" Conchita commented in an interviewWhile Wurst means 'sausage' in German, Conchita refers her choice of last name to the common German expression 'Das ist mir doch alles Wurst,' which translates as both 'it's all the same to me,' as well as 'I don't care.' She states that her name comes from the first meaning of the expression and adds "It doesn't really matter where one comes from, and what one looks like." In the same interview she says that her first name was given to her by a Cuban friend.

As Conchita Wurst, she participated in the ORF production The Hardest Jobs of Austria, where she worked in a fish factory, and in Wild Girls, in which a group of candidates had to survive in the deserts of Namibia together with native tribes.

Neuwirth graduated from the Graz School of Fashion in 2011, and has lived in various locations in Vienna.

Personally I didn't mind what he/she looked like, altho I thought there were other songs better sung but the message came over to me as being about tolerance and that's what is sadly lacking in our world.

I don't always watch Eurovision but prefer it with Graham Norton to Terry Wogan, and the show was quite spectacular in many ways altho daft in others.

Wasn't that impressed with our offering so not surprised we didn't do very well.

i bet whoever it was off here who went to Denmark as a pressie for her daughter who loves Eurovision had a great time.

OHH Mildred a frock and a beard just isn't good fashion sense
its like wearing white shoes with black tights
or your knickers over your leggings

its just not right ;-) ;-)

But if you wanna wear a beard with your best frock
that's fine with us hun ;-) ;-)

It might have been our best entry for years, but that doesn't mean it was great as the previous ones were worse than banal and abysmal. It was manufactured, cliched Eurovision fodder.

But that's what the contest is about.

Oh FGS!

Conchita Wurst is a ruddy good singer who thoroughly deserved her win with this song.

Who cares if its a bloke with a beard in a dress! LIVE & LET LIVE!!

As for the UK entry it's been our best for years nothing to be ashamed of there at all. I fully didn't expect us to do well as it's mostly political voting. But there were some good songs this year, the winner being the best IMHO.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 11 May 2014 00:07

It wouldn't be Eurovision without a power ballad delivered by a novelty act, sounded like a very dated Bond movie theme song.

I actually liked the Netherlands song so was pleasantly surprised it came second.

UK, as usual, was banal and abysmal.
