Another point! David - when you send a message are you using Genes' pre-formatted messages or are you actually stating who you are researching and what your connection to them is?

Always do the latter - many of us just read and ignore the meaningless auto messages.

ah ..................

thanks, Graham

That is probably the explanation

my home email is provided by my browser company, and has no connection with my GR, which I access through Firefox.

I rarely use my Google account, and haven't accessed my Yahoo account fro something like 8 years

You probably have your Yahoo account and GR accounted linked, so that when you log into your Yahoo account you automatically get logged into your GR account as well. I have my Outlook, Facebook and Twitter accounts linked in a similar fashion.

"click here to read message" in email takes me to straight to inbox. No need to key in password as I don't sign out.

Florence

I don't know!

I never sign out of GR .........

...... but equally, I've never been able to access a pm from the email message without having to provide my password :-S

Sylvia, yes that's right it reads"click here to read message" but it just shows message on GR and i never have to put in a password. Is that because i never sign out of GR maybe?

don't get confused ................

You send a message to someone on GR's internal mail system .......... that's called a pm, or private message

GR then sends an automated message to the home email address that they have on file for that person to say that a pm is waiting on GR.

If the email address is still active, then you should get it ................. unless your server for some reason decides to treat GR as "junk mail".

If you have changed your home email address and not notified GR ......... then their message will float around in the ether for ever and a day.

Now ............ assume that you have received the message from GR ................. it says something along the lines of (paraphrasing!) "click here to read your message"

You need your password to access the site through that link.

If you have forgotten your password ............... you cannot access the site

OR if you have died or become incapacitated, and no-one else knows your password, then they cannot access the site, either through that link OR directly.

Also ............ don't forget that no-one HAS to reply to any message from any other member, and there are members, both Free and subscribing, who do not wish to share.

This site was noted for the excellence and simplicity of the tree building programme, and many people took up the offer of Free membership just to have a place to build their tree, and did not wish contact with others.

Likewise with AOL, Florence.......

Graham, when I get messages in my inbox on here, they also come up in my yahoo mail. So even if i dont come on here for 2 months as i check my yahoo mail everyday, I still get mesages from GR.

Are you saying if i discontinue my membership on Gr and then if another member sends me a message, it wont get sent to my yahoo mail?

Just curious

Thank you for your very useful responses, especially regarding the purple envelope and that non paid up members can reply. At least now I will know that my messages are getting through.

It's not actually an email you send to other members on this site. It's a private message which goes to their inbox on this site. If the person you sent the message to no longer uses this site, they won't get the message.

Two recurring issues here :

1. email them at [email protected]
2. Anyone who has a tree on Genes can be contacted, a non paid up member can reply only. Have you checked to see if they have opened the message - if the envelope is purple they haven't opened it - they may have changed their email address.

There are many reasons for non replies

There are a vast number of trees on here which are not touched from one end of the year to the next, The main reason being the owner has probably either died or does not want to or need to contact other members.

The reasons for non replying can be long and this is a subject which comes up at least once a week.

And I would also add that I was given access to several trees in the past with less than 10 people in!!

As we can no longer contact the site administrators directly, perhaps someone on here would be able to answer my question:
We I send messages to other members regarding possible shared ancestors, I often do not get a response. Could this possibly be because they are not paid up members of GR, ie. non payment of susbscription means you cannot respond to emails?
Thanks
