It's a difficult time for you Shirley, I know how it feels to have to decide on the right time to let go. I hope Mirabelle will be able to stay with you a little longer.

I know you feel another cat is a big commitment but you could think about looking for an elderly cat that has to be rehomed when it's owner has passed away or had to go into care. Also there are many people having to downsize to places where cats or any pets aren't allowed. Our local Gumtree site is full of them, it's really sad to see these poor creatures having to leave all that they have known for probably all their lives and it would be lovely to help that cat have a future.

Thinking of you

I really feel for you Shirley.

I was devastated to lose one of my 7 yr old Singapura boys suddenly last year.

It's a heart breaking situation you are in, and the only advice I can give is that it is probably better to err on the side of letting Mirabelle go a little too soon, than a little too late.

My heart goes out to you.

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 16 May 2014 21:45

Tried to find earlier posts but advanced search says ZILCH so here goes

Mirabelle our 17 year old British Shorthair is suffering from a bacterial infection that has travelled up from her bowel to affect her bile duct and liver.

She had been very poorly and is still very jaundiced

Been to the vet very day now for 9 weeks to get her medication done . she is on so many pills its not possible to do them at home as she is unpredictive on whether she will eat or not . she is on steroids and antibiotics and she MUST have these daily

her latest bloods show her bilirubin etc is starting to rise despite all the meds . She has blips every so often when she doesn't poop ,has to have an enema and does it it her basket before we get home !! . plus needs a liquid transfusion cos she gets dehydrated .she has ORF days

Was told last week her condition is terminal as her liver is getting more and more damaged and she will end up with cirrhosis of the liver and there will come a time when we have to make THAT decision

Am dreading it BUT we wont let her suffer either we will let her go when its kinder to her to do so .

Its the price we have to pay when we take on a pet who become part of the family

We wont take on another cat as we feel now too old to be starting that commitment over again

our consolation is she is a very much loved girl who has given us as much love as we gave her and we wouldnt have missed that love for the world
