GR said they would fix this.

I believe they are sent fortnightly.

I received some Not Matches a month ago, and more a couple of weeks ago.

This week I received this message:

" We looked for new Hot Matches but didn't find any. Try adding more relations to your tree. "

I get that message often.

I added a few names to my tree last week.

It now has 19,607 names (some are duplicates)........ they're not all mine, I have OH's rellies there too.

I've posted a similar message to this one, it was suggested (can't remember who, but NOT a member..... a GR employee) I contact support. I didn't bother. Why not? Because I'd get the usual generic response.

The process is supposed to run every fortnight but even then it doesn't mean you will get any matches as it only checks a small random handful of your names each time.

This is that GR say in the FAQ's section.

"We have had to stop running Hot Matches for a while as we had performance issues with the site.

Our development team have just started to run them again but they won't be run every 14 days. 50 names will be randomly selected from your tree and matches will be sent out with these names. They will match place of birth and you'll also get some super hot matches. The names Smith and Jones won't be included. It's a rolling program so it might take some time before you receive any."

It used to be more, 150 I think, but it was reduced to 50 after there were performance issues with introduction of place of birth matching.

When I did have a tree on here, I found that after the initial rush the vast majority of the 'hot matches' were either totally non matches

1: name dob etc. wrong
2: duplicates

I think that if anyone has had a tree on here for more than 1 year that the matches that will come up will not really be useful.

What most of us are waiting for is that someone in that elusive branch of the family decides to start looking.... I know I was that elusive person once....

From the home page I see that they ran the hot match search on my tree on 11th May. Before that the last time was 26th Jan.

No matches were found on those occasions.

I have a suspicion (and it is only a suspicion) that they only run the search if you add names to your tree.

I didn't get any hot matches for a few weeks, I thought that was the time GR were "fixing" things.

I know they don't scan all the names we have, but the suggestion "add more names" is a bit daft.

I already know the answers GR will give..... either the usual generic response, or what's in FAQ.... which I have read.

let's accept that Hot Matches is simply not working .............. and has not worked for many moons!

may I suggest that you use Search Trees as an alternative until there can be a thorough Hot Match Search by GR's computers.


I don't think that any more than 100 names from my tree have been compared at any time since I joined GR back in 2004 ....................... and those 100 names could be the same ones time after time.

There are certainly more things wrong with GR than the simple Hot Match searches ......................
