Notice from Alastair Milne - My Tree is Going Away

Very well, I'll try it that way, and presumably put an end to the subscription charges. I regret that GedCom is not an ideal medium for communicating trees, since it not only doesn't include the media from the original tree, it also (inexplicably to my mind) doesn't record the sources for the tree's facts, which it seems to me are vital.

So I'm going to unsubscribe and hopefully the tree will remain accessible.

Thanks to all those who took the trouble to let me know of this.

I agree, leave it on here. I never manually amend my tree on GR only ever upload an up to date gedcom out of FTM. My ancestry tree is automatically synced to that too.

In fact I uploaded a new version yesterday, it took less than five minutes.

You can keep your tree up to date on Genes by exporting your Ancestry tree as a GEDCOM and importing it into your Genes tree.

It only takes a few minutes to do that. Of course it does not transfer photos and records.

I agree.. if you have a tree on here why not leave it.
A chap I knew who died a few years back his tree is still here, he was never a standard member just had a tree on here.. in fact he has them all over the place. Lots of mistakes in them and I would advise him of corrections from time to time.. Had a long list to send him when he died.

Why delete your account Alistair?

You can let your subscription lapse and stay as a free member. That way anyone who comes across new information will still be able to contact you about it.

You will also still be able to amend your tree, although I appreciate it is a lot of effort keeping it in synch with others.

This is for anybody to whom I may have granted access to my tree on Genes Reunited and who has been using that access:

I am going to close down my account before the next renewal date. I have geneaology efforts underway on a few sites, and it's getting too expensive -- not to mention impossible to keep all copies of the tree synchronised. For anybody who is also on Ancestry or MyHeritage and who feels my tree might in some way be helpful, I am most active on those sites.

Thank you all for your contacts and contributions! It has been most interesting.

Good hunting to all.
