WALES U20s 13 -- FRANCE 3

Wales Under 20s played an excellent game of Rugby against the Six Nations Champions France.

They played with heart and commitment, putting France under pressure.
Despite terrible weather conditions, they kept hold of the ball and kept territory.

The only try scored in this match was by Wales' Scrum Half- Tom Williams (Cardiff Blues).

Some excellent Kicking by Fly Half Angus O'Brien, only missing 1 conversion when a sudden gust of wind took the ball off course. He is certainly a player to keep our eyes on for the Wales Senior Squad in the future.

Excellent defensive work by the Wales players, including from James (Jumbo) Benjamin.

POINTS:

WALES
Tries: Tom Williams ..................5points
Conversions: Angus O'Brien .....2points
Penalties: Angus O'Brien (2)......6points
TOTAL-13

FRANCE

Wales Head Coach Byron Hayward commended his young team following their win.

He said that they had worked hard following their defeat against Ireland, and played magnificently.
He said that they had "shown their character and delivered a fantastic performance" "Credit to each and every one of them".

WELL DONE TO OUR YOUNG WELSH TEAM :-) :-) <3

WALES Under 20s v FRANCE Under 20s

I have had to wait until this afternoon to see this match, which I recorded Sunday Night, because the men of my household are watching The World Cup! :-| :-| :-D :-D :-D

Our young Welsh Team were yet again playing France, who they had beaten last Tuesday, with a score of 13-3. This time they were playing in the 5th PLACE SEMI-FINAL.

SADLY FOR OUR JUNIOR SQUAD...
..........THEY WERE BEATEN BY JUST 1 POINT :-( :-( :-(

FINAL SCORE- WALES U20s 18 --- FRANCE U20s 19

This was our Wales Under 20s Team:

BACKS:
15 Dafydd Howells; 14 Tyler Morgan; 13 Steffan Hughes; 12 Jack Dixon;
11 Ashley Evans; 10 Angus O'Brien; 9 Tomos Williams.

FORWARDS:
1 Nicky Smith; 2 Elliott Dee; 3 Nicky Thomas; 4 Scott Andrews; 5 Rory Thornton;
6 Olly Cracknell; 7 Scott Matthews; 8 James Benjamin.

Replacements:
16 Scott Otten; 17 Luke Garrett; 18 Ben Leung; 19 Ben Roach; 20 Will Boyde;
21 Luc Jones; 22 Ethan Davies; 23 Harri Evans.

And this was the French Team that beat us :-| :-| :-| :-(

BACKS:
15 Pierre Justes; 14 Kylan Hamdaoui; 13 Xavier Mignot; 12 Ivan Roux;
11 Arthur Bonneval; 10 Brandon Fajardo; 9 Baptiste Serin.

FORWARDS:
1 Youssef Amrouni; 2 Romain Ruffenach; 3 Tommy Raynaud; 4 Arthur Iturria;
5 Felix Lambey; 6 Jean Thomas; 7 Yacouba Camara; 8 Francois Cros.

Replacements:
16 Camille Chat; 17 Oleg Ishchenko; 18 Simon Courcoul; 19 Jean-Baptiste Singer;
20 Jean-Blaise Lespinasse; 21 Thibault Daubagna; 22 Francois Bouvier;
23 Lucas Blanc

THE MATCH:
An early penalty against Wales led to France's JEAN THOMAS scoring an early TRY, which was then converted by Baptiste Serin. This gave France a lead of 7-0 in THE FIRST MINUTE of the game.

Shortly afterwards, France returned the favour;-) ;-) courtesy of their Number 4, Arthur Iturria! This gave Wales their first 3 points on the Scoreboard as Angus O'Brien's boot sends the Ball right between the posts! :-) :-)

Unfortunately Angus' second shot at a penalty goal, for France's illegal scrummaging, fails as it just hits the post.

Wales Prop Nicky Smith is injured and has to be taken off. He was replaced by Luke Garrett.

Wales again has a penalty as French player was holding on to a player without the ball in the line-out. This leads to a BRILLIANT TRY by a breakaway from JACK DIXON, which was set up by a great pass from Angus O'Brien.
Angus Converts right between the posts to send Wales into the lead 10-7.

Wales collapses maul.

FISTICUFFS ENSUE :-D
Referee Matt O'Brien (a Kiwi who now lives in Australia) calls the Captains and warns them that they must use their Captains' positions to control their boys, or there would be consequences.

Excellent and Exciting Teamwork leads to another WALES TRY- this time by number 14 TYLER MORGAN, right in between the posts.
Angus O'Brien goes for the Conversion, but he curls it, JUST LIKE HIS HAIR! :-D
Score is now at 15-7 to Wales.

FRANCE'S NUMBER 3- TOMMY REYNAUD is the next to get a TRY.
HOWEVER- Ungracious in his success, he hurls the ball at a Welsh boys head as he is lying on the floor. :-| :-|
Baptiste Serin misses the Conversion.

At HALF TIME the Score stands at 15-12 to WALES :-) :-)

Second Half kicks off.
France attacks on the TRY LINE. Wales turn it over.

Wales' number 8 James Benjamin causes a penalty to be given to France by "coming in at the side" right in kicking distance of the goal.
Relief as Baptiste Serin again misses :-)

Some great play by number 15 Dafydd Howells who's move was compared to our wonderful Leigh Halfpenny by the TV Commentator. Also some excellent kicking by Fly Half Angus O'Brien.

Angus O'Brien goes for another Penalty Goal. A Fantastic Goal takes Wales to 18 points to France's 12.

France gets a penalty now, for Wales player's feet off the ground, but France knocks on.YEY :-)

The excitement of the Welsh fans can be heard in the stadium as they burst into song...Bread Of Heaven being sung with gusto.

France steals the ball at Wales Line-out, BUT wonderful ...re-steal :-S :-S by Wales Hooker Elliot Dee.
Cracking kick from penalty makes much ground for Wales.

Scrum, and Scrum problems ensue, leading to a yellow card for France's Tommy Reynaud for coming up in the Scrum.

Wales decide not to go for a Penalty Goal but to push ahead to get a Try, as they are so close to the Try Line.
This in hindsight would be a big mistake! The Try didn't materialise and they would regret the opportunity to get a possible 3 more points later on:-( :-(

Wales made a lot of mistakes in the Line-outs, losing the ball on a number of occasions.

Next- a funny incident! France was nearing the Wales Try Line, and although a Try was prevented, in the scuffle France's Arthur Iturria SHOULDERED THE REFEREE TO THE FLOOR :-D :-D :-D

Nearing the end of the game now, AND WITH JUST 10 MINUTES LEFT ON THE CLOCK JEAN-BAPTISTE SINGER SCORES A TRY :-0 :-0 :-0 ..

Taking the score up to 18-17 to Wales...

A SUCCESSFUL CONVERSION IS UNTHINKABLE:-(...
and yet...this time Serin converts :-( :-( :-(

The clock has gone red... the hooter has gone... we are still in play...Wales has the ball. France concedes a penalty to Wales..

The ref asks O'Brien does he want to have a shot at goal... it's an awful long way...IT'S ALL OR NOTHING TIME.....

WHAT PRESSURE ON THE YOUNGSTER. YOU CAN SEE THE CONCENTRATION... HE KICKS.....ALL OF WALES HOLD THEIR BREATH......

JUST WIDE :-( :-( :-(

IT'S ALL OVER... BY JUST 1 POINT :-( :-(

FINAL SCORE-
WALES 18 --- FRANCE 19.

POINTS-WALES:
Tries- Jack Dixon; Tyler Morgan .......10points
Conversion- Angus O'Brien ................2points
Penalties- Angus O'Brien (2) ..............6points ...TOTAL POINTS 18

POINTS-FRANCE:
Tries- Jean Thomas; Tommy Reynaud; Jean-Baptiste Singer .....15points
Conversions: Baptiste Serin (2) ..... 4points ......TOTAL POINTS 19

Sadly Wales did not get 5th place in the Junior World Championship.
However- we have a shot at 7th place, when we face Samoa this Friday 20th June.

MATCH OVERVIEW:

Wales' Fly Half, Ethan Davies, kicked off this match at the QBE Stadium, North Harbour in New Zealand in their battle for 7th Place in the IRB Junior World Championship.

It was noticeable to me, that a young man that I have become very impressed with- Angus O'Brien, was on the bench today, as Ethan Davies had regained his place at Fly Half.

Other Wales players I have been impressed with in this tournament are Dafydd Howells (number 15) Tyler Morgan (14) and James Benjamin (number 8)

The young Wales team played a cracking game of Rugby Union against Samoa yesterday. How very exciting it is to watch Wales Senior International Players of the future.

Wales Seniors' Head Coach,Warren Gatland, was watching this match with interest with that thought in mind :-)

The first TRY of this match came from Wales' DAFYDD HOWELLS (15). This was the culmination of excellent teamwork by Wales including a great breakaway by James (Jumbo) Benjamin :-) :-)

Ethan Davies' attempt at Conversion hits the post.

WALES U20s 5 -- SAMOA U20s 0

Next Wales gives away a Penalty to the young Samoans, RIGHT ON THE TRY LINE
:-0 :-0
William Talataina MU scores the Penalty Goal putting their first points of the match on the Score Board.

WALES U20s 5 -- SAMOA U20s 3

JAMES BENJAMIN is the next to score aTRY. It goes to the TMO Judge, but the TRY is awarded.
The conversion taken by Ethan Davies however, hits the post yet again.

WALES U20s 10 -- SAMOA U20s 3

Fantastic play by Wales' number 12 JACK DIXON sees him running through the Samoans like a GLADIATOR :-) The ball is kicked and caught, but Samoa's number 5 is offside resulting in a penalty for Wales.

ETHAN DAVIES takes his position to go for a Goal Penalty Kick. Will he manage it this time? YES!

WALES U20s 13 --SAMOA U20s 3

Exciting play carries on and by halftime, Wales has had 62% of Possession.

HALF TIME SCORE:
WALES U20s 13 -- SAMOA U20s 3.

SECOND HALF RESUMES
Samoans come back strong in the second half. Wales fighting hard to stop them getting a Try. It's only a forward pass that may have prevented the Samoans pushing over the Try Line.

Samoans are still playing well with great runs. Another potential Try was prevented by Wales' number 14, Tyler Morgan, who pulled the Samoan out of play.

Luc Jones now replaces Tom Williams as Scrum Half.
Callum Lewis replaces Nicky Thomas at number 3.

Wales has a penalty for Samoa's number 2, Ieremia Mataena, holding on in the tackle.
Wales has decided to push ahead for a Try instead of opting for an attempt at a penalty goal.
Would this decision have the same outcome ,as the Senior Team's decision to do the same, in last weeks match against South Africa?
Yes, it did. Wales under 20s Knocked on, so this try did not materialise.

A Free Kick to Wales sent the ball to the Samoa 5 m Line.
Wales are on the attack again, but Nicky Smith knocked on.

Scrums follow, with great driving from Wales.
Penalty to Wales for Samoa Illegal Scrummaging.

This time they ARE GOING FOR GOAL.
BUT AGAIN- ETHAN DAVIES MISSES HIS TARGET.

I DO THINK THAT ANGUS O'BRIEN WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER AT FLY HALF THAN ETHAN DAVIES!

More Wales substitutions
ETHAN LEWIS replaces SCOTT OTTEN
HARRI EVANS replaces ASHLEY EVANS

AND YES
ON COMES ANGUS O'BRIEN :-) :-)
However- it is not to replace Ethan Davies at Fly Half, but DAFYDD HOWELLS at number 15.:-S :-S

SAMOA'S IEREMIA MATAENA IS YELLOW CARDED ON 1 METRE TRY LINE.

Wales puts in at Scrum... and another TRY for JAMES BENJAMIN. :-)
Converted this time by ETHAN DAVIES

WALES U20s 20 -- SAMOA U20s 3

Intense playing by both teams lead to their conceding penalties.Play carries on.

CLOCK HAS TURNED RED-HOOTER HAS GONE
There is a Penalty coming for Samoa as number 18 Callum Lewis was Off-Side.
Samoa takes a quick Tap kick penalty and is running for a Try but fails.

PUT IN WALES- KNOCKED ON AND IT'S ALL OVER.

FINAL SCORE:
WALES Under 20s 20 -- SAMOA Under 20s 3

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR YOUNG WALES TEAM..
..STARS OF THE FUTURE :-) :-)
Commiserations to Samoa

Wales have taken 7th place in the IRB Junior World Championship, with Samoa finishing 8th. :-)
