what does the D stand for in D-Day. Have looked on google but no explanation other than a military term....just wondered if it has meaning. l know it marks the start of Europe invasion 1944: D-Day.
Maybe there is no word just the letter D!

It just means "day"

The Americans used terms like that and H-hour

"Decision Day?", for the planners

"Disaster Day" for many...........

There's a lot of folklore surrounding D-Day but it isn't really a term specific to June 6.

The American military used it all the time (and may still do for all I know).

Days and hours were known as "D" and "H", just like a set point in time is known as "T", hence the terms "T minus 4" or "D plus 3" etc.

It really is nothing more exciting than that I'm afraid.
