and "different from" and "similar to"

"accommodation" has as many c's and m's as it can accommodate

Definite - not definate

Stationary - as in standing still - so, the "a" as in "stand"

stationery - as in paper etc - so the "e" as in "letter"

simple ways to remember which is which

I used to take the minutes of our local Community committee and one guy always said "pacific" instead of "specific"

I couldn't find any fault with Her Majesty's reading today, despite the fact that she only once glanced momentarily at her awe-struck audience.

Oh yes, Island, just recently I heard some programme presenter use the word 'miss cheeve ee us' ...couldn't believe my ears, just WHERE do they get them from?

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 4 Jun 2014 20:57

and how about this one -

"please contact the programme via myself"

or "myself and so and so will be taking the questions"

Why not "I" or "me" ? beggars belief

There was a wonderful headline in our local newspaper (though not for the victim or his family).
Apparently a man was 'Murdered by a pub'.

Perhaps outside, or near, it's not too difficult
:-S

One from the Worcester Standard:

'Children gutted as thieves strike'

Surely a horrific event like that was worthy of the nationals?

Methinks, perhaps, the children weren't divested of their intestines - just very upset!

Bronical - for bronchial

Libery and Febary - for library and february.

On the other hand, most southern accents don't emphasise the "r" in words like first or third. In Scotland the "r" is always audible.

Hah!! there are some corkers on here.....being murdered by a pub, of all things, snigger, snort!!:-D

Know what you mean, Bob, about using words which then become a habit - I always refer to my laptop as my lapdog (ref: the dippy secretary in Absolutely Fabulous). :-0

Ann - yes, what IS all this 'myself' stuff these days??? :-S

Roy Noble of BBC Radio Wales is my favourite presenter.

Affect and Effect.

And why did personnel turn into human resources? When I was retiring I told my boss that I was not a human resource. He said I should learn to move with the times!

Ann, I agree with you about the use of "myself".

Dermot, why Roy Noble? is he particularly good or spectacularly bad?

Dermot

Dermot Report 6 Jun 2014 11:40

Roy is a gem - clear as crisp pronunciation with his usual Welsh lilt.

Easy on the ears too.
