I am pleased it's not just me that gets irritated.

OH gets annoyed when I am screaming at incorrect spelling on the breaking news banners. Beleved....what? Organisasion....eh?

BBC used to be the world standard in news reporting.

Thankfully, I can use the 'change channel' or 'off' button :-D

The only saving grace is laughing at Fox News when they are reporting any world news. As they really don't care much for what happens outside the US (other than sport) I don't have many chuckles.

Weird isn't it. The BBC was always deemed the one broadcasting company which set the standard for all.
How those days are gone!!

BBC is in my opinion the worst.

They move parts of London around regularly. And they have not got any idea how to pronounce any place name which may look a bit odd!!!!

Wend

Wend Report 2 Jun 2014 20:59

Cuckfield down here is so often pronounced 'C - UCK-field rather than Cookfield as it should be, by local radio presenters. Ucking annoys me :-D

I have noticed that many BBC newsreaders' pronunciation is poor...I often wonder if they just don't care any more for getting it right, or can they no longer afford to employ researchers?
Many foreigners learn English by listening in to 'auntie beeb' on the world service, relying on it being correct.
But the BBC continues to get it wrong, or worse still, changes their mind about how a word is pronounced, often within the same news-reading!! The other day I was listening to a report about the forthcoming world cup in Qatar, and during the time it was read out, the word Qatar was pronounced 3 different ways, for goodness' sake!! By the way, if anyone is interested, the correct pronunciation is like Katter... forget Catarrh, that's something nasty in the back of your throat. :-S

EDIT
P.S.
While we are on the subject....I have noticed the standard of newsreaders' grammar is declining too. Can't think of an example right now but I've heard some strangely constructed sentences lately!

Here in the South we have Cosham and Bosham. Cosham is pronounced Coss'm or Cosh'm, but the other one is said Boz'm. My poor mother was rather embarrassed to have to say this when we moved down here in the sixties, because it sounded too much like 'bosom'. :-D :-D :-D

Mind you there are quite a lot of English villages and places that people struggle to pronounce correctly, mainly because local people over the years have adopted their own way of saying them.

We used to live in Dyfed, that's Duvved not Diefed or Diffed.

After the county ceased to exist it remained on royal mail's database for more than a decade.

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 2 Jun 2014 16:15

remember when some pillock decided to pronounce "golf" as "goalf" - they all started saying it - soon got fed up with it though

other pronounciations that have been changed after years of uses are names such as Kabul and Tutunkhamen - ridiculous

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 2 Jun 2014 16:13

indeed - except Welsh - I admit some of the words are difficult to pronounce, even for some of us who are Welsh - but as has been said - they don't even try - they have Welsh speakers working for the BBC - just ask them

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 2 Jun 2014 15:45

My mother used to get very cross because the BBC (all there was in those days) used to go to enormous lengths to pronounce all sorts of weird and wonderful place names -- except Welsh! :-| :-|

Welsh people are known to 'talk tidy'. And I use the Wenglish dictionary regularly.

When I am confined to my bed I watch an awful lot of news channels, everything from Al Jazeera to Russia today.

Sky news holds the record for the worst effort at correct pronunciation of names; peoples' , places, organisations etc.,

Yet another one today with Prince Felipe being pronounced wrongly. When they attempt Welsh it's even worse to the point of embarrassment.

They have teams on hand to help but obviously don't ask for or take advice.

Aaaaaaaargh!!!!!!
