If the page number is wrong the GRO won't find the record; so they'll give you a refund. Then you can try the other page number if need be.

I had a problem a few years ago when one of the numbers was illegible. By replacing it with a * but all other details the same as on the register, GRO were able to find it and issue.

You do need to buy her birth certificate .......................

at least you will then have her mother's name!

The certificate will cost you £9.25 incl post and packing

Order only from GRO (General Register Office) ..................

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

You have to register, but it is free.

Sirius gave you the information form freebmd ....................

Births Dec 1904 (>99%)
Wildman Alice Mary Hemsworth 9c 193

The form will ask if you have the GRO number .............. answer YES .............. that's the set of 2 numbers

As you should have seen, Graham found a slightly different record on another site, with page number 103 instead of 193.

Try the one that Sirius gave you first.

On that 1911 Census ............

Mabel Wright is also down as Adopted, and down as born in Derbyshire

It still comes down to the fact that there was no legal system of adoptions until mid-1927, so finding information is all but impossible.

Graham I am looking at the image on freebnd and I think it's 193, but certainly worth checking.

Graham

Those 2 records look similar, but the page number is different. I checked the original image and it does look like page 103 :-S

Adoptions only became legal in mid-1927.

Before that, adoptions were ad hoc ................ often between family and friends, or from orphanages.

There might be records from an orphanage, but even those are very hit and miss.

Welcome to the boards Wendy

There were no formal adoptions until 1927ish

If it was a later adoption only the adoptee can access them anyway...so when they die they cannot be accessed

Wendy
