Pentecost is not a Christian festival, Elizabeth. Pentecost simply means 50 days in Ancient Greek. So for Jews it is called Shavuot and for Christians "White Sunday" or "Whit Sunday".

Political correctness (and over sensitivity imo) amongst Christians has led to us all calling it Pentecost. Remember when it was translated in New Testament as pentecost it was just Greek translation of "50 days" and was a synonym for the Jewish "Feast of Weeks".

I think White Sunday or Whitsunday is far more appropriate for Christians, and shame we are losing these festivals because of inclusivity imho.

Either way, "50 days"is very significant in Judaic-Christian mutual history as a time of harvest, of gathering in.

And a time of great celebration in both traditions.

Is the barley in yet this year?

One of our more enterprising ex-dairy farmers locally grew horseradish, one of the bitter herbs of Passover.

It all had to be done in an orthodox way with no women involved and a blessing from a rabbi.

That was no problem, only he and his sons work the farm, the wife and daughter run other businesses from the farm.

Dear All

Hello

Today is the start of Shavuot, which is one of the Jewish harvest festivals.
It is often referred to as the festival or feast of 'Weeks'.

It usually takes place approximately seven weeks (fifty days) after the first day of the spring festival of Passover.

This time of year marks the start of the wheat harvest and the end of the barley harvest.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shavuot also marks the time that the Jews were given the five books of Moses, collectively named the Torah, on Mount Sinai.

So it is regarded as an important historical event.

Shavuot is sometimes called the Jewish Pentecost. The word Pentecost here refers to the count of fifty days after Passover.

The Christian festival of Pentecost also has its origins in Shavuot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prayers are said on Shavuot to thank God for the Torah and for his law.

Synagogues are decorated with flowers and plants and it is a time for celebration.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For our Jewish customs and friends, Shalom.

Take gentle care all
With best wishes
Elizabeth,
xx
