Voters to be given power to kick out MP's

Sounds like another way of conning the tax payer. Nice little 'quango', ie another grossly overpaid 'job for the boys,' to sort through the petitions, before handing on a 'token' few (of people the party doesn't like anyway) to MP's for discussion - just to prove it works. :-(

eRRolSheep - I have no doubts that there will be quite a lot of pre-election promises, from the 1st class citizens who hope to govern us, as they attempt to con the 2nd class citizens known as the electorate ;-)

Could open the door to "Witch Hunts" methinks. (finger pointing, mud slinging, etc)

Ooops... that happens today already anyways, doesn't`t it?.

It depends upon what is deemed to be "serious misconduct" surely.

Sounds like a pre-election con to me.

KenSE - I agree with your comment that there needs to be some means of limiting these petitions to MP's who have actually seriously misbehaved. However I do not agree that it should be a committee of MP's that judge their colleagues, it should be a totally independent body that decides.

There needs to be some means of limiting those petitions to those MPs who have actually seriously misbehaved, otherwise an Opposition could organise petitions in marginal constituencies at will.

The MPs in the committee would hardly dare to block a petition in obvious cases of serious misdemeanor, as they would tend to lose votes at the next general election if they did.

It was announced in The Queens Speech to Parliament yesterday, that the government is to bring in legislation before the next general election to give voters the power to kick out their MP if they were found to be involved in serious misconduct.

It appears that this procedure would trigger a by-election if more than 10% of an MP's constituents signed a petition.

Sounds like a good idea, however there is a slight problem with the government's proposals - this could only happen "if a committee made up of MP's" ruled an MP should be kicked out, how democratic is that :-S
