A pigeon has nested in my (unused) chimney. One of the empty shells landed on the bedroom carpet. Bob

It's awkward sending a 27 year old to bed, especially if they have a girlfriend/boyfriend n tow

could be an incentive though! ;-)

Thanks Joy.. had no dead birds in our garden but was a bit worried about exploding birds..
Dont, cha just love my eldest troll?
Had a Dove who built her nest behind the Sky dish .. she worked so hard but the nest was rubbish and the egg fell out just before it was due to hatch

Rice and cereals

Cooked rice, brown or white (without salt added) is beneficial and readily accepted by all species during severe winter weather. Uncooked rice may be eaten by birds such as pigeons, doves and pheasants but is less likely to attract other species.

Porridge oats must never be cooked, since this makes them glutinous and could harden around a bird's beak. Uncooked porridge oats are readily taken by a number of bird species.

Any breakfast cereal is acceptable birdfood, although you need to be careful only to put out small quantities at a time. It is best offered dry, with a supply of drinking water nearby, since it quickly turns into pulp once wetted

Honestly.. they haven't touched it and we have replaced it with proper bird food today.. seeds and stuff
Blackbird has built a huge nest (think she is looking at nest lets for other birds)
Wrens have a nest and my cat (Evil Ginny) who is 11 years old can't climb up the fence next to the thick hedge anymore.
Bats are wizzing round the garden at dusk again ..
Ok... I admit I am trying to market my house here
watch out Ann .. I am determined .. coming your way very soon

Probably like bread it should be soaked as it is not good when they are feeding babies, if it swells it could choke tgem. :-(

or a very windy garden?
The Dove really did look .. how can I say this?

Well at least it wasn't sage and onion :-D

I have heard this about all sorts of food even dry bread and rice left over from weddings, my wife always soaks bread it but I suspect it is only if they totally pig out on oats alone and then drink a lot of water that they might have a problem. Most of their moisture I would think comes from moist grubs etc. with luck the worst you will give them is a bloated feeling ;-)

OK .. please don,t judge me on this ...
We have a bird feeder in our garden and I ran out of bird seed, we had some out of date Quaker porridge oats stuffed at the back of one of the kitchen cupboards
So being kind I put this in the bird feeder..
Son has just come home and said ' OMG Mum, if they eat that and then drink water they will swell up and explode!'
Please tell me this is just orrible son winding me up?
I must admit to having a Dove who now looks a bit obese and the Blackbird has a strained expression..
Do you think spring watch will find out what I have done? :-S
