are there any record of the service men and what beaches they landed on during the second worl war my father in law was in the army and i would like to follow his landing at normandy

if you know which regiment he was in you could try googling for info - put in the name of the regiment and D Day Normandy landings, e.g. South Wales Borderers D Day Normandy landing - you might get some info that way

As for his army record, they can only be obtained from the MOD at Glasgow for free by his wife, of for a fee of £30.00 by other family members. If you decide to order them there is a wait of up to 10 months, which you are advised of when ordering.

However, the best thing would be the regimental diaries. These are kept in one of three places

1: National Archives, Kew
2; Imperial War Museum
3: Regimental Museum

Of the options available I would recommend the Regimental Diaries as these will give a detailed day by day report of all the actions of the regiment.

The Army records will not tell you about any action he was in.
