I was flicking through the threads this morning and noted the number of reported posts, looks like the silly season is here again - probably down to the hot weather :-D

'tis the tizzy season ;-) Handbags at dawn and all that... :-)

It always puzzles me that people can be bothered and have so much time on their hands. :-S

When a post gets reported the poster often doesn't know why. So I think it's better to say something if you feel offended by somebody's post.

DazedConfused Report 11 Jun 2014 10:08

When it gets hot, people hit the cold falling down water which then makes the fingers twitch.

:-D

Graham, in the past some posts which have been reported it has been blatently obvious why it was reporeted.

There have in the past been a couple of people (one at least no longer seem to be posting these days) who went out of their way to be offensive or would regularly RR threads just to be spiteful. Oddly it would always happen on a Friday night!!!

My only gripe is when a thread is RR'd, and I have not seen the post before it was zapped. But that is my inquisitive and enquiring nature....... Oh alright I am a nosey mare.. :-D :-D

JustJohn Report 11 Jun 2014 10:13

All I would say is that there are certain threads that are very emotional - probably for one or two posters on Genes.

If you are a clever chap and you know all that, you do not start a thread to support Royal Mail management in forcing their Skelmersdale workforce to deliver the Sun - or any other depot in country. Many died through police actions that day; many lies were told by the Sun to discredit Liverpool fans and create sensational headlines (see first page of thread). All claimed they had spoken to official sources, but never any proof of any of that.

If you do begin a hurtful thread like that and you absolutely know the consquences, you must be defining why you come on Genes chat imo.

I have held back my views - wish I had said what I thought.

When this petty, childish, immature, tit for tat occurs, it tends to discourage me from posting anything, hopefully some resemblance of tranquility will return - sooner rather than later.

When I was a teenager, my dad told that I should not get into discussions with people about 2 things, religion and politics as they are so personal to us and because of this can cause far too many arguments. Oh how right he was.

I was also told , never play cards with soldiers on trains!!

this was in the days when National Servicemen (me included) could travel wearing our Army Uniform without fear or abuse....

When Lorry drivers would nearly always pickup a hitchhiker in uniform.....
but sad to say them days is long gone........

Maybe the media need a good bashing, John, for making the postal workers feelings public. Dont they think that would cause bad feelings.

:-P

Susan10146857 Report 11 Jun 2014 13:27

Can't see how anyone would know who RRed a thread./post...guess maybe....but know....No!

As for tranquility returning......am I missing something?....... Is this thread an opportunity to re-instate the tranquility of GR?.......Hmmmmm!.....wanders off to ponder :-S

I have to admit to reading Errols OP and didn't for one moment think he was deliberately trying to stir or be insensitive....It was a report......but maybe....someone involved in the day RRed it.....Maybe GR deleted it.....who knows!......and who knows who RRed you John......sorry....didn't read any of them....too busy :-D

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 11 Jun 2014 13:35

Kay?? You make a very good point. Thankyou.

Susanwith. I can usually make a good guess who reports posts. You will have noticed that I have never thought Errol has ever reported anything. However much I like Errol less than a couple of other posters, I know he would not do that.

But there are a couple (and I can name them for you in a pm) who report continually and they are the reason that people c and p jokes all the time, and c and p strong opinions.

Yes, I absolutely know who reported me 12 times last night. Simple process of elimination. And it definitely was not Errol.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 11 Jun 2014 13:44

Well I hope it will be remembered next time a media report that is posted that its only a media report and may not be the view of the poster, unless they have stated theirs as they are as entitled to a view as anyone else.

Susan10146857

Susan10146857 Report 11 Jun 2014 13:53

The elimination process cannot possibly work John. Look at how many people look in......hundreds sometimes.......unless you actually see someone pressing a button you nor anyone can possibly know who is RRing......I have a saying......If a person doesn't like a person.....then they will obviously be number one suspect....

By saying that a person RRed you, you could be doing them an injustice.

For instance, I can see how *I* could be accused of RRing sometimes because of my views.....but......and you are at liberty to believe this or not, I am not an RRer.......I am well known...away from GR and to some of my GR acquaintances, to stick up for what I believe to be right whether I like a person or not........Now...take all that into account......I could possibly be very upset by accusations to the contrary........but knowing human nature.......If you don't like them it must be them!......tis water off a ducks back.......most of the time.....well....depending on the phase of the moon.....

:-D

JustJohn Report 11 Jun 2014 13:59

I can think of a lot of times we can get hold of an emotive news headline and put it on here with our views.

Almost always that is how debates start. Some go well, some not so. But we don't raise an issue that we know will deeply hurt the feelings of people on Genes chat. I can think of many other topics that would upset people a lot. They are never raised - a sort of agreement between posters, I guess.

If OFITG had raised the subject, or almost anyone else, no real problem. Thye would have posted it for the right reasons. But, although I don't know where Errol lives or anything much about him, I am 100% sure he lives in the north west and understands the great hurt still experienced after Hillsborough. He is an intelligent man and it was clearly imho a Bait rather than a De-Bate. He rarely does debates.

Susan10146857

Susan10146857 Report 11 Jun 2014 14:10

There you go again John!....You cannot possibly know a persons motives for posting!.....There is no Proof!.......You and maybe others may see it that way, but I saw it as a post office blurb......I also agree with their sentiments......You may think that The Poster made a faux pas, which you are entitled to......others may not agree with you.......But you cannot possibly know the intention of a post.....unless it is blatantly obvious by its wording.....IE...I am posting this to annoy you etc

Take this thread for instance.......I could surmise by the OP and ensuing posts that it was put up to cause trouble.......or I could surmise that the Poster didn't expect the unrest it may cause......who knows.....one to ponder.....but I and no-one else ( unless they have been told by the poster ) can definitely say that this thread was deliberately posted to cause unrest......whether it does or not.....Sooooooo......can you see what I mean?

Dermot

Dermot Report 11 Jun 2014 14:31

It’s entertaining for the rest of us on the sidelines to have threads with conflicting arguments / opinions. It reminds me of our school debates.

What I worry about sometimes after I have added my own penny-halfpenny-worth, have I done so clearly & without being disrespectful. If I am subsequently asked to explain a contribution, then I realise I have failed at the first fence.

Mind you, I wonder occasionally if those who normally relish robust arguments appear muted later on by the possibility that they really are wrong sometimes.

‘Discuss‘ - as our bewildered teacher used to encourage.

Susan10146857

Susan10146857 Report 11 Jun 2014 14:35

Hmmmm not sure I hold with that argument entirely Dermot......On the one hand you could be right....on the other....They may have gone out for the day

Edit:- Sometimes, Dermot, I believe that although what I have written has a very clear meaning, the other person may only see/read what they want to see and therefore my meaning is of no consequence to them.......tis a discussion worthy of a thread of its own methinks.....Debate.....the art of......I am sure there are some very clever people on here who could give us a few pointers.......One thing I do know.....slagging people off is not debate.....it is what it is!

OneFootInTheGrave

I am often surprised how some people fall into the media trap because, newspapers, other media sources, and politicians, of all political persuasions, have a track record of twisting the facts, especially about those issues relating to - immigration, welfare & benefits, corruption in public bodies, and Europe. The result is that they provide fodder for inflammatory headlines, targeted at those who share their views.

Personally I tend to ignore the information produced by the media and politicians, they have a tendency to be very biased and often contain misleading information.

I prefer to do some research and formulate my own opinion, I do this by using verifiable facts and figures from sources that have nothing to gain by not telling the truth, unlike the media and politicians, who take the facts and figures, put them through the mincing machine and produce something that comes out the other end which is completely unrecognisable from its original state.

What is it they say - there are lies, damn lies, and statistics ;-)
