Anyone got a BT HUB5 ?

We got ours in April but we are having problems.
It drops WI-FI connection to our devices on average of 15-20 times a day, irrespective of where it's sited

It's the overall signal strenghth that's really poor.
If it's connected the main phone socket, there is no signal to the Sky box in the lounge ( about 20 feet away).

The same happens vice-versa
If we set it up in the lounge, we havei ntermittent signal to our home PC and no signal at all to most areas upstairs.

Yesterday, a very nice lady from the BT call centre ( in India) told us to leave it plugged into the main socket and run an ethernet cable to the Sky Box.
Neither a safe nor practical option for us

BT are phoning back today, so here's hoping they can find another solution.
My daughter is a techno geek and is certain that we have a faulty device.
Our previous 10yr old Belkin covered the whole house without any problems.

Are you using any Apple products at all? (eg iPhone, iPad, iPod etc)

GlasgowLass

Yes!
Main PC is an IMAC
3 iPhones plus an iPad

EDIT:
Although wi fi to various windows based laptops also drops

Will bear that in mind when BT call later today.

If you want to give it a go yourself there is a fix but it involves changing your SSID and is a little complicated.

More than happy to try to talk you through it if you want, though.

Have you tried changing the wireless channel it uses?

I had the problem with a Virgin hub, which supposedly selected the best channel but always opted for one which went up and down in strength.

I changed it to select another channel and it has been fine ever since.

eRRolSheep Report 12 Jun 2014 11:12

KenSE - that's basically it but you need to alter SSIDs too.

It's due to a 2.4Ghz/5Ghz issue in all probability.

Thanks guys
The resident household geek named Kat has already found the 2.4Ghz/5Ghz issue and will try it later ... only.after her daily, midday, online speed-quizzing.
She couldn't possibly miss that!

Will let you know if it works.

:-D :-D

Fingers crossed - make sure you tell them about the Apple scenario although they may well try to deny all knowledge of it.
You have a cat that is PC literate?
Does it use the mouse?
Could make a fortune there!

Good luck.

Errol,

Bob - although I haven't come across it, yes it could. When I get home I'll dig out my notes from when I fixed it a few months back for a customer and see if I can find anything of use.

Do you know what make and model number your router is and are you having similar problems? Also, what kit are you running - actual computers, tablets, phones etc?

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 13 Jun 2014 11:44

sorry for the delay,

its a Huawei hg523a
running two tower Pc's(wired) and one laptop wirelessly,

repeatedly tells my laptop I have no internet access or that I am not connected to a network

eRRolSheep Report 13 Jun 2014 11:51

Hi Bob - no problem.

Are they all Windows machines? And are you running any Apple hardware such as iPhone etc?

Does your laptop ever connect?

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 13 Jun 2014 13:12

oh yes it connects ok, its just that after its been idle for a while it loses the connection...........
when I got talk talk to check it, its ok, but of course when I'm locked out, I cant get to talk talk...........j

yesterday I think it was after the morning start up it took about an hour of re booting, rebooting the router, before I could get on line.......

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 13 Jun 2014 13:15

That sounds like a different issue.
Have you tried connecting the laptop to a different network - a coffee shop or pub for example?
If so, have you had the same problem?
Also, has anyone else tried to connect to your network wirelessly?

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 13 Jun 2014 19:34

No Errol this lappie hasn't been on any other network(except aol, previously)

and its supposedly a secure network(requires a password) so don't know if anyone has got in, or tried to

my daughter used her lappie on it a couple of weeks ago

but didn't think that would upset anything.....

My resident Techno Geek has been playing about with the Ghz and it has improved things somewhat.
