I am sorry to hear this Ann, thank goodness we always let phone calls go to the answer phone or I am sure we'd have been tricked at some stage by these evil people. Do cancel your card though.

I have Sky Protect and it is on DD and continuous until I stop it.

I too get these shysters calling round the time for renewal, but I know they are just out to con me.

I hate to say this Ann, but you are very gullible and trusting. And I am assuming you live on your own and have no one to guide you.

IN FUTURE, BEFORE TAKING OUT ANY SUBS. OR PAYING MONEY. TELL THEM TO CALL BACK, MAKE A NOTE OF THE NAME OF THE COMPANY AND THEN COME ON HERE AND WE WILL ADVISE YOU. PLEASE. I HATE IT THAT YOU ARE BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF.

I have the motto 'trust no-one'.

Please do think more about any phone calls you get in the future. And if they say you can call them back and give you a number, do ensure you get a dial tone before calling, many just stay on the line and hope you do not notice.

thanks for the advice - and you are right - I am far too trusting

Awww.....that's rotten for you Ann......so sorry.

Have you got 'Caller display' on your phone?

If I don't recognise the number - especially if it looks odd (some of them do), I simply don't pick the phone up.

When I forget to look and get the usual sort of yatter from a company, I usually do something like :

say "I don't accept cold calls" and replace the receiver

or

I leave the receiver lying on the work top until it goes dead

or

if in a really silly mood, I put the receiver down and start banging things around.

Hope it all works out well for you though......and yes, cancelling your card is probably a good idea. :-D

And I have just had a thought. Wonders if although 2 different scams, not the same people. As it does seem odd that you have been caught out twice in quick succession?

These scammers will often move from one scam to another and go to same people who they have hit in the past.

Not sure why you would want to pay £100+ a year for insurance when you can buy a new box for not a great deal more.
I have had Sky HD + for 5 years, not had any problems apart from adverse weather conditions and the odd hiccup which can be sorted with a bit of tweaking

Can you not go back to these people and say you aren't sky and I already have cover so I want this contract cancelled

If they refuse threaten to go to trading standards

Many years ago I too got scammed by some company pretending to be sky and offering me insurance cover now that my years guarantee was up .

They knew all about my sky contract and I really thought they were Sky .even to being able to ring me on my ex directory phone number which I only give out if absolutely necessary

I took out the insurance and renewed it several times. Each time thinking it was sky . Even the paperwork they sent was headed sky protect

Sky eventually did contact me about having cover and I said I already have it !!!
They took down the details and said well we will contact you again when your years cover with these people are up

They had got wind of the bogus company pretending to be them and they took them to court and won and the company was wound up .all customers who had running contracts with the company got their cover taken over by sky as part of the court judgment

I really thought at the time I was dealing with sky so know how easy it is to get the wool pulled over your eyes .

I would try to get this bogus company to cancel and refund your money

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 14 Jun 2014 15:39

Just a thought and without reading back Ann. Have you actually contacted Ske and made them aware?

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 14 Jun 2014 15:48

made Sky aware today

I have rung the bogus Sky lot on numerous occasions - all I get is "Thank you for calling EDS Sky cover, all our staff are busy at the moment, please leave a message and we'll get back to you" then it cuts off so you can't leave a message

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 14 Jun 2014 16:01

You can see from Shirley's post (if we hadn't already realised) that this EDS company is acting outside the law.

Quite a few phone up and seem to know quite a lot about us. I challenged one recently who knew my real name and address: "Is that Lord Tonypandy I am speaking to? Yes. Do you live in Castell Coch (he pronounced it fairly correctly)? Yes. Do you have a Rolls Royce Registration LT 1? Yes. Are you currently paying £1352 for your car insurance? How do you know all of that? We use the phone book, the electoral register and our own records for marketing purposes.

This was one of these International Calls. I was quite spooked they knew all that about me and have now gone ex-Directory and tick the not to be published box when I register for my franchise.

I feel they are acting totally illegally, and certainly against the spirit of Britishness that Dermot is exploring on another thread. I believe the two people who have conned Ann into giving her card details out should be behind bars for a long long time. Perhaps Trading Standards can advise.

When I had this phone call from supposedly Sky??? it was to my mobile...why? I had to have a landline to have sky so they must have known it

Think I was more annoyed that they called during Coronation street :-D

Elizabeth2469049 Report 14 Jun 2014 16:24

I had this some years ago - I in fact won a year's sub to Sky from a puzzle magazine, but arranged for this to go to my daughters in their names (they were sharing at the time). Only about a month later I had a letter telling me my sub was nearly up (can't remember the name of the firm) - daughter checked with Sky who assured her she had the rest of the year to go. I went back to the magazine who assured me they hadn't given my name or address to anybody.
