You can buy a pad that is good for unvarnished nails, there is an emery side(1) to file them into shape, and don't forget to always file towards the middle of each nail, never file in a back and forth way, Side no 2 is for removing ridges etc, buff gently and not too much. Side 3 smooths nails to a soft matte finish and for a real shine, use side 4.

Have fun

Never had long nails.Played the piano since I was 7 and had jobs to do that would never have permitted me to have them.
Used to put polish on when I worked in Sales, but found that they are healthier without anything on.Do use a cuticle oil.
When I see some long nails I often wonder what lies underneath! :-S

Believe it or not castor oil is good for fingernails. It helps harden them, and stops you nibbling (imagine the side-affects!). Good for the cuticles too.

My nails are pretty sad and weedy.

Stopped biting at fourteen and forty years later I found out how to have nails.

When I take a fancy to having nails now I paint on a coat of clear varnish every day. Don't take any off, just keep piling it on, chips don't show if it is clear.

If you think about it, coating the structure with varnish makes it thicker and so it will be less fragile.

When they are long enough I use coloured varnish, I like khaki best.

Dont constantly use remover daily -acetone free if you can get it,,,,it will strip your nail of any natural iols and leave them dry and brittle,,,,have a day or two without varnish to let your nails breath alway wash and lotion hand after varnish remover,,,,,give them a daily gentle buff across the nail to this helps remove any ridges and gives a nice healthy glow..gently massge the cuticle at night with baby oil you can also use cooking oil,!!!,,,,,,get a professional file done then a quick weekly with a fine board will help the nail layers to grow all the same length ,they will be stronger and hey presto you'll have better nails than ever before,,,,,,talons....... :-D :-D

Talons are worth all the effort. <3

Real ones, though, not fake.

Go for it.

I treat my nails badly I think, having them in water and cleaning things over the years without wearing protective gloves and such. I am lucky that they are strong and the older I get the faster they grow. I don't use coloured polish on my finger nails as it wears off so fast with all the washing up and chores but often use an Avon product called Pearl Shine which looks natural and just sort of wears off without noticing too much. Bright coloured polish doesn't suit the colour of the skin on my hands unless I get a tan but I make up for it by using colours on my toe nails.

Hope you can get yours up to scratch Uzzi, if you will excuse the pun,

Sylvia, I am sorry you can't have the nails you used to have but I am sure you do what you can with the nails you have now, and shorter nails can look very nice.

My Mum used to enjoy me giving her a manicure, not that she was ever into nail polish except clear stuff for special occasions, but she would always say how much my nails were like hers in shape and with the same prominent half moons on my thumb nails. The half moons on my finger nails bare show but the ones on my thumbs are really large and obvious.

My nails are like paper, always peeling & splitting.

I must have tried every nail product on the market. A couple of years ago I found Sally Hanson's Miracle Cure... and it works! Now I have to cut my nails when they get too long.

I broke two nails yesterday........bent them back over the nail bed... OUCH!

Sylvia I feel for you having had good nails and losing them although that makes me sound so selfish wanting good nails. My main problem even now is I don´t look after my nails and I do love water. You have actually given me a kick up the rear with out meaning to because I could have nails if I took a lot more care, my nails will never be naturally strong bt they could be better if I took the time.

I am so sorry that you lost your beautiful nails and that I am the fool to remind you. <3

Hi Uzzi.
I used to have lovely nails which were strong and healthy and grew quickly. People admired them. Since I became ill ten years ago, my nails break all the time and have ridges down them. I sometimes have gells or shellac on then which last longer than nail varnish and they do look good. :-)

Not those metal ones you hammer into wood but those wonderful nails that some people manage to grow on the end of their fingers. My mother always had gloriously well manicured nails. Mine well to say they were stunted after thoughts might be being a tad polite to them. But I was always envious of nails not mega long ones but nice manicured nails.
I don´t bite my nails never have done but I do suck my fingers when in thought and I also do use my teeth as a nail file. Also for years of working in the hospitality trade where I have not been allowed to use varnish and had nails constantly in water I gave up on them.
Now I have decided to grow my nails :-0 :-S well attempt to. I have 6 rather long (for me) strong nails and yes they are varnished with all sorts of stuff. I did have 2 more but I lost 1 to a dog lead and the other to a scrubbing brush.
Since I have had nails I have scratched my eye several times, I have a huge scratch on my back (I scratch at my hair in my sleep). I am having to re learn how to type on my phone...mind I couldn´t do that before ;-). I am getting up in the morning to apply nail varnish :-0 :-0 :-0 and that is the most scarey bit about it !!!!

Is it worth it I ask and I know the answer is yes because to me well manicured natural nails says ...we are well manicured natural nails :-D. Actually I don´t know what it says I just know it´s something I have always wanted :-D
