I do love the automatic button about viewing your tree on genes. If someone cant be bothered enough to actually ask about who they have in there tree and maybe yours is a no no. Totally ignored. Don't open my tree but feed the information to the rellie they ask about.

You should be really wary of giving out information to strangers on the internet - including on GR and other genealogy websites.

Just think - a lot of this identity theft that goes on is by people who have got hold of facts about you - place of birth, mother's maiden name, name of first pet etc. :-0 On the internet banking and suchlike some of the companies seem to use facts like that as security questions.

Yup pees me off too, it's up there with people who post a question on a forum (DIY ones are the worst) several people spend time answering and then no word from the OP not even a Ta!

Although I have been asked hundreds of times for access to my tree, none have had any connection.....I could tell without looking at theirs....they were just people I had helped on the boards.

Only one person who gave my aunts name asked to view (may have a connection somewhere).....I asked twice what her connection was to my aunt, she never replied.....knowing she had a tree with over 50,000 on Ancestry and stole every photo she could get her hands on.....she never got access.

My tree is private on ancestry and would never give anyone access, whats the point with having a private tree if you share with a public tree owner?

Of course I would help if asked a question about an ancestor...but that's it

It is annoying, isn't it?

There are many of us who don't open our trees until we have established a level of trust with the person who has contacted us. Instead our initial reply is to tell them who the (named) person is related to + dates/places - parents, siblings, spouse and children.

Its normally fairly easy for the requester to work out from that if there is then a connection, and hopefully tell you how the person is related to themselves.

Unfortunately amongst the FH fraternity, there are those known as 'name collectors'. They gain access to a person's tree then copy all the names off it without checking that the information is correct. That's how errors are perpetuated. :-0

It does seem pretty nasty - but of course we are each entitled to keep our tree private. though I always felt that joining GR involved sharing. It would be much better mannered for them to at least reply explaining why they are not giving access

why do some members ask to view your tree to see if there is a connection to a certain person you give them access to your tree and when you ask them for access to their tree they completely ignore your message and don't give access or reply to your requests for access. makes me mad :-\
