I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed so I thought it was enough (I mean, what to I know) No, I don't turn any thing off! I mean you can't turn something off, if you can't find it, right. It might of been turned off by this malware or whatever but NOT by me.

My old computer had Norton on, but it had to be taken off, cause it was interfering was something which was interfering with something else.

I have this anti-malware installed now so all I have to do is remember to use it.

But anyway, Thanks Errol for the advice

IMPORTANT

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is NOT a replacement for anti-virus software and should be installed alongside it.

The only major difference between the free and premium versions is that the premium version provides real time scanning and automatic updates. You can still get updates with the free version by clicking on the subtly entitled "Check for Updates" button. You will also be prompted to update when you run the programme.

If you wish to install Malwarebytes A-M you should install the free version and run it alongside other anti-virus software.

Absolutely everything that the Premium version does can be done for free using alternative (and usually better) software.

Glad to hear the malwarebytes worked for you - I remember now I did pay the one-off sum for permanent use as OFTG did after the success of the initial scan, probably why I get the daily check-up

I have Norton Anti Virus but for some reason the Windows Security Centre has switched on (probably during an online update!) and now I cannot turn my Norton back on.

So frustrating......

Before I retired I used to purchase my anti-virus & security software, as my income reduced after I retired I decided to use Microsoft Security Essentials which is free, find it as good as some I have purchased and does what I want.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/security-essentials-download

To deal with malware I purchased Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium, a one of payment with no recurring annual renewal fees - one of the best security products I have ever bought, money well spent, there is also a free version available..

https://www.malwarebytes.org/

I also use the free version of CCleaner to clean up bits and pieces on my computer.

ALL anti-virus software is fallible.

This is very often due to the user rather than the actual software.

The big players in free anti-virus software offer products for home users which are just as adequate (and in some cases better) than their paid-for equivalent. That is the general concensus across the computer industry and has been for quite some time.

Using an ad blocker so that you cannot see what a Trojan is doing is not advice I personally would offer. Trojans can wreak a lot of havoc in the background.

It should also be noted that having anti-virus software installed is not enough on its own. There is the matter of updates to consider and also a myriad of other computer and browser settings

As I said earlier...

The best tool against malware is ... YOU!

Sorry Errol,,,,, Avg free version does let in Malware. and Trogens,-----------..add blocker wont get rid of it,,,,true, but it may stop it pop ups till you can see to sort it,,,,,,,,,

"do you have anti virus installed ?dont rely on free ones such as avg,,,,,,they dont offer full protection,,,,,"

They offer perfectly adequate protection. AVG, Avast, Microsoft etc etc all work fine and IMHO can often be better for casual home users than paid for versions.

The best tool against malware is ... YOU!

I'm not quite sure how turning off a pop-up blocker will get rid of malware but if you genuinely think you are infected there are a number of things you should be doing to secure your system.

Turning things off is not one of them - it is a bit like sticking your fingers in your ears and singling "la la la" at the top of your voice so that you cannot hear something. It doesn't make it go away, it just means you cannot hear it.

What you do will depend on a number of factors such as what you are running, what the actual infection is etc etc

Well, that seems to have worked :-D Thank you ladies

Lets hope it stays this way, for a while.

I use malwarebytes, it got rid of a setup that even Kaspersky didn't recognise - I use the free one and it runs daily - to begin with much of what they pick up was PUPs -potentially unwanted programmes - so it is worth having anyway just to prevent unwanted programmes sneaking in

Have you tried malwarebytes?

Use the free one.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

I used it for years as a stand alone scanner it should not conflict with your anti virus as the free one only runs when you start it, the premium one runs in the background as I understand it and might cause a conflict with existing security program.

Either use the link or search it out for yourself if you prefer.

.......(and non ones too.)

How to you get rid of a computer virus? I have already gotten rid of the Trojan Downloader thingy, but there are still a virus there, I've threatened the computer with bodily harm, scanned it to an inch of its life, etc. but it doesn't help. I know it is still there because by the time the website finishes loading there are so many ads on the screen I can hardly see want I am looking at! (and when the ads start talking to me I leave the internet quickly.)

and before you ask I can’t afford to take it to a computer doctor. $30 a second or something equally stupid is to much for me.

Any help would be great. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh there they are again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
