In Oz we have "silverside", but we call it corned beef.

I haven't had UK corned beef since I was a child (younger than 12), and can't remember what it was like. My uncle was in Oz a few years ago, he liked the silverside, but said it wasn't anything like the corned beef he was used to in Scotland.

Corned beef, white sauce, mashed potatoes & cabbage........ YUM :-D :-D

Lady Scozz......
You have stirred a memory in me about the Oz corned beef.
8 years ago I was in Oz..Victoria at a bush land resort with my daughter and we had another friend from Brisbane coming to spend a week...so I went to Woolworths, saw a piece of silverside and thought it would be nice to cook and cut up cold with salads, picnics etc as I like silverside in UK.

I uncovered it from the film wrap and found it covered in a sort of gel which I thought was salt so washed some off...wrapped it in foil and put in oven evening before we were picking up friend.
Well..it remained pink and I thought it was the oven .I stayed up checking it,sent daughter to bed and then decided to turn off and leave in oven overnight....still pink in morning.
On speaking to people we found out it was corned beef Oz style and we did eat it cold with salad on our picnics......it's as bad as asking for thongs in the UK!!!

I haven't eaten corned beef for years! It's possible that my parents linked it to war time austerity. As soon as they found their feet, it disappeared off the table.

A recent Jamie Oliver cooking on a budget programme demonstrated corned beef hash and corned beef pie. Mind you, the ingredient he used was made by a butcher, not out of a Fray Bentos tin ! If he can use it, it will soon end up on restaurant menus.

You/I never seem to see the dripping of yesteryear. Perhaps we are more likely to buy trimmed joints with the fat cut off?

Det, You've reminded me of another yummy 'pleb' food - Fray Bentos Steak & Kidney pies :-D

They disappeared for a few years - I believe the factory closed, but has since re-opened.
It has to be the Steak & Kidney pies - any other filling hasn't got the 'Je ne sais quoi'. The puddings are nice too :-D :-D

I remember the individual steak and kidney puddings used to be referred to as "babies heads" puddings by my old man he was from Sussex, perhaps it was a local term for them :-0

I used to eat Fray Bentos pies and I do miss them but buy them for OH and Fred's mate to eat. Fred used to like them too.

When you can get them for £1 they make a pretty fine meal.

Oh dear, I must be a food snob. I only like Marmite. Have tried Vegemite but didn't like it.

Still have one precious jar of vege Bovril from when the foot and mouth scare was on. Sainsbury's used to do a yeast extract that tasted a bit like Bovril. Dunno if they still do.

lol Brenda :-) I've never cooked silverside (the corned one) in the oven.

Many shops sell a "boil in the bag" one....... I don't like them at all. If that's all that's available I take it out of the bag & give it a good rinse. I always bring the meat to the boil and tip out the water to remove most of the salt...... then put it back in fresh water, with a good slug of cider vinegar, some peppercorns & a couple of bay leaves.

Kate & Sidney pies? blaaaaaaah. I detest the taste of kidneys.

I have happy memories of Scottish Steak pies, especially at New Year. Mum got them at the butcher, in what the Scots call an "ashet". Lovely thick gravy. I think they're still popular at New Year....... maybe just with my cousins :-)

:-D

What are you having for dinner tonight? We're having linguini, with prawns & tiny veggies (fresh) in a cream sauce..... avocado in my half, cos OH hates the stuff.

Someone mentioned Black Pudding, which you can now get in most supermarkets.

But have any of you who like the above, tried White Pudding. It is sold now in Morrisons.

Years ago, my mum who was Irish always wanted some good old Irish White Pudding. We eventually found a butchers in Church St. markets (W. London, we lived in Sth). So whenever we went over there to visit my gran, we always got a couple of White Pudding 'sausages' yummy. OH now loves this too... :-)

I hate corned beef and Spam. Too many memories of school dinners. I also don't like offal like liver and kidney.

I don't think I'm a food snob, I just don't like the taste.

I love marmite, though.

Dazed - some supermarket black pudding is foul.
The black pudding HAS to have the proper container/skin - not plastic :-(

Corned beef had many uses I remember my dad made me a toy fort and one of the first words I remember reading was on the bottom of the timber he had used to make it "Cooked Corned Beef" :-)

Oh! and old George my avatar used to like it too, but he preferred the thinly sliced stuff, a bit easier for the old chap to chew.

His favourite meals to join me in were.
Chicken Korma,
Corned Beef,
Wafer thin ham,
and KFC! ;-)

We didn't eat Spam at home, in fact I had never seen it but we did eat corned beef.

I came home from my very first school dinner and said that I had been served salad with dog meat.
