WHY?

There was nothing offensive in it. It was simply informing us all about what had happened to John and stating the facts.

...now there's the defining comment. If a person (anyone) is warned and continues to do what they have been warned about then surely something has to be done.
Maybe the six and a half years could seem harsh to some but if a person continues to do something they have been warned about then they have to accept the consequences.
